Interested in
gaining expertise
and knowledge in
the field of mass
communication at the
very highest level?
Choose from among
our graduate
programs to prepare
you for careers in
research, teaching
or high-level
industry positions
in the field of mass
communication.
The Doctor of Philosophy
in mass communications
prepares students for careers in
teaching and research in higher
education and for research and
management positions with
mass media organizations. The
program provides flexibiliy to
tailor students’ coursework to
their particular career goals.
The Master of Mass
Communication is a 36-credit
hour program designed for
students who want the skills
and knowledge for a career
in the professional world. The
M.M.C. program emphasizes
the management and practical
skills needed to succeed as a
communications professional.
The program includes a
semester-long practicum
experience working in a mass
media organization. A thesis is
not required for this program.
The Master of Arts is designed
primarily for students who wish
to pursue a doctoral degree or a
career as a research professional.
The M.A. is a traditional
academic program involving a
minimum of 30 semester hours of
coursework, including a
six-hour thesis.
The Certificate of Graduate
Study in Health Communication
is an 18-hour post-bachelor’s
program. The Certificate is
administered jointly by the
Department of Health Promotion,
Education, and Behavior, the
School of Journalism and Mass
Communications, and the School
of Library and Information
Science.
The Mass Communication and
Law degree program is designed
for students who intend to
become media law attorneys or
for students intending to become
mass media professionals who
want a legal background. This
program will allow students to
complete the Master of Mass
Communication and Juris
Doctorate degrees in four years
rather than the customary five
years if pursuing both
degrees separately.
The University of South Carolina is an equal opportunity institution.
Welcome to Our New Home
In Fall 2015 the School of Journalism and Mass Communications will move
to an innovative new building designed for a 21st century communications
program. Located in the historic heart of the USC campus, the facility will
be an inviting atmosphere for teaching, learning and media research. Mass
communications graduate students will enjoy their own graduate education
suite, just steps away from the school’s rooftop garden, where students can
study or meet with classmates while enjoying the South Carolina sunshine.
