Juan Gris studied painting for two years in his adolescence in Spain. In 1910, he decided to focus on being a painter and moved to Paris where he met Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, and Georges Braque. He lived in Montmartre for around ten years. Gris painted in a Cubist style which was popular at the time. After a few years of being close collaborators, Gris and Picasso grew apart both artistically and personally. Gris worked as an illustrator for journals including L'Assiette au Beurre and Le Cri de Paris.
