Kalgoorlie is a mining town located 596km northeast of Perth in Western Australia that was founded during the 1893 gold rush when over 700 men arrived within days of the first gold discovery. It remains a bustling mining center and is home to the largest open pit gold mine in Australia, the Super Pit, which produces 850,000 ounces of gold per year. A crucial piece of infrastructure enabling the mining is the 500km Goldfields Pipeline that pumps water from Perth to supply the needs of the gold mining operations in the otherwise desert region around Kalgoorlie.
