KERRANG! Megan and Talia
History and Success Kerrang! is a rock music magazine published by Bauer Consumer Media in the United Kingdom. It had its first publication on 7 June 1981 and was edited by Geoff Barton, initially as a one-time supplement in the Sounds newspaper, which focuses on the genre New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the rise of other hard rock acts. AC/DC appeared on Kerrang! ’s first cover. Original owner was United Newspapers who then sold it to EMAP in 1991. In 2008 EMAP sold its consumer magazine to current owner Bauer Media Group KERRANG! remains the UK’s best-selling music weekly at 43,253.  Changes in market conditions and music consumption have affected sales, but it still remains committed to serving its passionate readership with a weekly magazine.
KERRANG!’S target audience The target audience is 16-25 year olds and specific towards rock music fans. Pictures of youth’s favourite bands on the front cover using ‘direct address’ will attract their audience as it makes the reader feel involved. Including ‘cover lines’ will attract their niche audience and lure them in to buy the magazine. Having a ‘free poster’ of the bands the target audience like, will attract their buyers as they would like to have the inside free poster. Big bold writing will catch the audiences eye
What can it offer to media consumers? Kerrang magazine offers it’s media consumers a chance to read up about their favourite band making them feel up to date and involved with a particular interest of theirs. It will also offer free products to attract customers, and as it is a music magazine it will often be a free CD. This gives people a chance to try out new music as it is on a magazine they trust and is good advertising to an unsigned or new band. As well as this the consumers are kept up to date with gig line ups and concerts that are coming up.
What are its plans for the future? In the future we feel that Kerrang magazine will create an online addition in which you have to subscribe to as smart phones allow people to read up news wherever they are. In addition to this they may create an iphone app using the same method. As for the paper version, we believe the freebies will increase to increase the selling rate of the magazine but on the whole technology will be the future.
