STRATEGIES FOR IMPLEMENTING KEYBOARDING
Direct Instruction using technique reinforcement – should be an essential
component of every keyboarding class .
• Sensitize students on how to use Rapid Typing 5
• Allow students five minutes to review the last set of keys as a set induction
• Reinforce posture and keyboarding techniques
• Allow students to type for 15 minutes, walk around to
observe technique, provide individual support if required.
• The goal for each class is automaticity
Tip!
Technique Reinforcement
 Sit up straight.
 Curve your fingers over the
home row.
 Hold your wrists up and even
(not resting on the
equipment).
 Keep your eyes on the copy.
 Keep your feet flat on the
floor.
 Call the letters as you type

THE NICKEL TEST
This involves putting a
nickel on the back of each
of the student’s hands and
seeing if they can type
without the nickels falling
off. If they do it
successfully they have
good form on the
keyboard and they get to
keep the nickels.

15. Q & A
TENTING/COVER THE KEYBOARD
• this strategy requires students to
work in peers. One student covers
the keyboard with a sheet of paper
while the other student attempts
to type the characters displayed on
the monitor. This strategy tests
the students’ ability to keep their
hand on the home row as well as
reach for the correct keys above
and below the home row. Once
the student has completed the line
they check the statistics to review
accuracy.

CLOSE YOUR EYES OR BLIND FOLD
This strategy is used to strengthen students’
awareness of position of the keys on the
keyboard. It can be utilized at any level to
reinforce key technique. E.g. type the
following keys without looking f d j k or
type the following word ‘dog’ without
looking.
