KITCHEN GARDEN
It is an art of growing vegetable in small piece of
land in a planned way in the vicinity of living /
residential house to meet the need of the family
with fresh produce all year around regularly.
INTODUCTION
Purpose of kitchen garden-
 Provide food for family.
 To save the amount incurred on kitchen vegetable.
 In ancient time it is the sole source of food mainly in vegetarian
families.
 Provide balanced nutrition in a hurried ready-made-meal-world.
 The saving to made it utilize for other beneficial purpose.
PRINCIPLE OF KITCHEN GARDEN-
 Perennial plant located one side of the garden, to avoid
shade on other plants.
 The compost pit are placed in two corner of the garden
they mean to kitchen waste.
 Both the side of footpath may be used to train the plants.
 The bunds separating the beds may be used to grow root
vegetables i.e. onion.
 Pandal is used to train the plants with climbing nature.
GUIDE FOR ESTABLISHMENT KITCHEN

 Evaluate the space
 Decide on the right type of pot and
planters
 Make a list of plants to grow
 Get the right potting mixture
 Source of seed and sapling.
 After care
EVALUATE THE SPACE
 South east side is most preferred for more sunlight.
 Land preferred to backyard of the house ( if available ).
 Space of 250 meter square is enough for five members of
family.
 Near to water source for easy availability of irrigation
water.
 Area should be protected from stray and wild animals.
 Away from competing tree roots.
DECIDE ON RIGHT TYPE OF POT AND PLANTERS
 Selection of pots depend on the availability of
space.
 Size of pots decide according to the canopy and
spread of plant.
 Mainly three type of pot’s are available – small ,
medium and large.
 If you have balcony use combination of railing
planters.
 Creating layers will increase the space available.
SELECTION OF PLANTS TO GROW-
 Select according to the climate of your
area.
 Start with easy to grow plant that well
suited in moderate climate.
 Tomato, cucumber, bitter guard and bottle
guard are some plants that are beginner
friendly.
 Herbs like mint, coriander which are used
daily in Indian cooking are also a good
option to choose.
 Once you get confidence you start with
exotic crop like lettuce and broccoli.
GET A RIGHT POTTING MIXTURE
 Ideal mixture for growing plants contains the – cocopeat, soil
and compost.
 Other example of growing medium- pearlite, vermiculite, sand
etc.
 Selection of medium depend on kind of plants.
 Ideal mixture should be have good water holding capacity and
rich in fertility.
SOURCE OF PLANTING MATERIAL
 Collect seed from your near by nursery.
 Or you can save seeds from last year grown crops.
 Some cities of India have network system for
homegarden you can join them and exchange seeds
with needy peoples.
 Other private nursery, kvk and locals shops also
provide planting material for home garden.
