Guy Fawkes and his friends planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder while King James I was inside in 1605, as not all Englishmen liked the King. Their plot was discovered when the gunpowder was found, and Fawkes and his co-conspirators were arrested. Fawkes confessed under torture and was hanged for his role in attempting to assassinate the King. The failed Gunpowder Plot is remembered each November 5th in England with bonfires and fireworks where effigies of Guy Fawkes are burned.

- 5. 36 barrels of gunpowder were put in the basement of the Houses of Parliament on November 5th.
- 6. The barrels were found. Guy Fawkes and his friends were arrested for trying to kill the King.
- 7. Guy Fawkes was tortured until he confessed to trying to blow up the Houses of Parliament. He was hung.
- 8. Every year on November 5th we remember the gunpowder plot. We have fireworks outside.
