The document analyzes changes in land cover on the Kisatchie National Forest from 1999 to 2009 using satellite imagery. Unsupervised classification of Landsat images from both years identified changes between hardwood forest, pine forest, mixed forest, and other land cover types. Accuracy assessments found user's accuracies ranging from 65-90% for forest types. Overall, hardwood and mixed forest increased while pine forest decreased. However, changes varied between districts, with some gaining pine forest. The results suggest some sub-management areas may face challenges meeting desired future conditions. Remote sensing provides a useful but coarse approach to long-term monitoring of land cover change.
