RAMIFICATIONS OF LEAST RESTRICTIVE
ENVIRONMENT (LRE)
By: Morgan Patterson
RAMIFICATIONS OF (LRE) AS IT APPLIES TO
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES BASED ON
IDEA AND 504 GUIDELINES.
 Mainstreaming is used under IDEA to ensure
that students with disabilities receive an
appropriate education with those who are non-
disabled. Students with disabilities are to be in
the regular classroom whenever supplementary
aids or services can be provided for an
appropriate education.
 The least restrictive environment will provide
students with disabilities a more meaningful
education than that of an education in a
continuous restricted environment.
RAMIFICATIONS OF (LRE) AS IT APPLIES TO
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES BASED ON IDEA
AND 504 GUIDELINES.
 Students with disabilities are to be included in
the regular classroom whenever possible and
appropriate. However, if the student with the
disability is disruptive or harmful they can be
removed into a more restricted environment that
will be more appropriate for their needs.
 Students with disabilities must receive
educational benefits, whether it be socially,
educationally, mentally, when in the regular
classroom setting.
Least restrictive environment (lre)
(LRE) FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A DISTRICT
DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION.
 I was able to speak with Traci Turk about her
perspective on LRE.
 She explained to me that it is important for her
to educate the regular classroom teachers on
ways that students with disabilities can be in the
classroom as much as possible.
 Traci spoke about the importance of having
appropriate services available for students with
disabilities and if they are not available, finding
ways to make them available for the students.
(LRE) FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A DISTRICT
DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION.
 Traci also spoke about the importance of
educating the families and the students
themselves on the importance of LRE and
the benefits that it has.
 The last thing Traci told me that for her she
knows she’s is doing her job when her
students with disabilities in the district are in
the most least restrictive environment at all
time.
LRE IN MY CLASSROOM
 Least Restrictive Environment is very
important to me. It is important to me that
students with disabilities be in the regular
classroom setting as much as possible.
 I will ensure that I provide my students with
disabilities any technology or services that I
can so that they may be in the regular
classroom.
LRE IN MY CLASSROOM
 One of the many reasons I have chosen
SPED as area of concentration is so that I
can provide for my students with disabilities
in my regular classroom. I hope to be able to
keep them in there the entire day unless their
disability is so severe that, that is not
possible.
