Conceptualizing guidance

Guidance
An assistance made available by a competent person to
an individual to;
Direct his/ her own life
Develop his/her own point of view
Make his/her own decision and carry his/her own
burden

Characteristics of guidance
1. Continuous process
2. A service meant for all
3. An assistance to an individual in the process of
development

Functions of Guidance
1. Adjustment – accept the unchangeable, change
the changeable
2. Orientation – introductory information to people
embarking something new
3. Development – Helping to achieve the best

Counselling
1. A purposeful, private conversation arising from the
intention of one person to reflect on and resolve a
problem in living, and the willingness of another
person to assist in solving or coping with it
successfully.

2. A talking cure - based on conversation, on
the capacity of people to ‘talk things
through’ and to generate new possibilities
for action

3. The action inline with solving a
problem or coping with it successful

Characteristics of counselling
1. Privacy and confidentiality
2. Counselee's willingness

3. It does not involve giving advice or directing a
client to take a particular course of action
4. The counsellor may help the client to look at

decide the best for them
