VII. Midwives
I. Doctors and new technology
     A. Electronic connections between docs and other providers
         1. Connect doc directly to doctors, hospitals, drug companies,
medical suppliers, health insurers, medical databases
              – it connects the doctors all over the world much faster, they
dont have to rely on one year old medical journal
              – communicate with the health insurers
              – questions answered by other doctors
              – they can see your medical info very easily on the computer.
                Legible writing
              – you can just email your records to other doctors
         2. Doctors will obtain current medical information on-line
         3. doctors still wary of the internet for 2 reasons
              – anyone can see your database, there are hard disc problems,
                the computers break
                   – hence many hospitals have 2 systems
              – ease of use. it is very difficult for them to work a computer.
II. Patients and the internet
      – you can google your illnesses
      A. Major source of medical information for patients
      www.webmd.com
      www.medicinenet.com
      www.intelihealth.com
      A. Changes doctor-patient relationship
      B. good vs bad websites
           • bad if selling something
           • who is the source of the information and there should be
               qualifications listed for them
           • does the site have balanced information - do they talk about the
uncertainties of the treatment, they should talk about the risk
           • learn about your disease so you can negotiate your treatment
           • doctors might not know everything so patient might initiate the
               treatemnt be asking tfor medicine
III. Other effects of new technology
       A. Medications
           • patch
           • needles
           • inhalers
       B. Robotics and computer-guided imagery
            • the first robotic surgery - (need to find out)
            • docs dont have to be at the site of the surgery
            1. Docs will perform procedures online
       C. Electronic monitoring devices allow patient to track own health
            • you have id chips in people or dogs!
                • they tatoo memory chips on dogs, you know if it is your dog or not
                • so people inject id chips into babies so they wont get kidnapped
                • they have a bio metric method for id’s. it scans the back of your retina
                  and identifies you
                • eventually we will all have chips in us that will monitor our blood
pressure and other important medical things
       D. Computer assisted self-diagnosis
IV. Genetics may change doctor-patient
           relationship

      A. Genetic screening
           • job screaning on your geans
           • curing medicine / prevention

      B. Gene therapy

      C. Designer drugs
           • tailor drugs to match your DNA and the ones that
does not cause you side effects
V. Sociology of genetics
     – downside to your dna info
       – your susceptibility to genetic disease may become
         a social form of discrimination
          – eg. no jobs cz they dont want to loose people and they
don't wanna pay for health insurance
          – no one wants to marry you
       – new determinant of the social structure
