Lecture capture: creating and sharing learning resources made outside of the
lecture theatre
Angela Newton, University of Leeds, a.j.newton@leeds.ac.uk>
In 2014, the University of Leeds introduced Mediasite Lecture Capture and At Desk Capture
software across the campus (mediasite, 2014). Library Learning Advisers in Skills@Library
have spotted an opportunity to use the At Desk Capture software to provide additional
academic skills support for students.
Longstanding dissatisfaction about ‘one shot’ teaching activities, has led to most Library and
Academic Skills support units creating or integrating online tutorials and materials into their
websites or institutional VLEs to support student learning. Although these can deliver a good
learning experience, they are time consuming to create, and difficult to get up and running
without specialist knowledge of e-learning (Blanchett et al, 2012).

without specialist knowledge of e-learning (Blanchett et al, 2012).
It is widely acknowledged that short blocks of learning can be very effective in an online
environment (Creelman, 2011). Well-made materials that exploit this can support students at
the most appropriate points in their academic career, particularly when teamed with module
areas within a VLE.
Mediasite At Desk Capture, offers staff the opportunity to create professional desktop and
audio capture, which is instantly uploaded to a VLE; this is ideal for situations where small
nuggets of information are required. New learning resources can be created very quickly, and
with minimal equipment.
This Teachmeet will outline our approach to creating materials using At Desk Capture,
ensuring that they are of a uniformly high standard, and share some of the problems
encountered along the way.
