Review of Related Literature and Conceptual
Framework
This chapter shows the review and analysis of
related literatures and studies that became the
foundation of this research. This part includes the
presentation of the concepts involved in the study and
the conceptual paradigm that shows the relationship
between variables found in this study. Moreover, the
hypothesis and the definition of terms are included in
this section.
Review of Literature and
Related Studies
What is it?
The purposes of this section are to tell what
research has or has not been done on the problem and
to explain or clarify the theoretical rationale of the
problem. This section provides a general picture of the
research topic.
Remember
1.Only studies which are related in
purpose, method, or findings to the
current study should be included in the
review. The discussion of such studies
should be in the form of a brief critical
analysis of the purposes, method of
study, principal findings, and conclusions.
Remember
2. Clarify the interrelationship of the
studies reviewed. Point out weaknesses
and strengths of each study.
Remember
3. Point out how each of the studies
reviewed relates to the problem at hand.
Summarize the review and provide a
transition from the past studies to the
present one. The latter should be
shown to relate with or evolve from
earlier work.
Remember
4. In the text, only the last names of the
authors are given. In the case of
citations of different works by persons
with the same surname, initials should
be included with the last names for
proper identifications.
Conceptual Framework
What is it?
From the review of the literature, the researcher
can formulate a tentative theoretical scheme for his
research problem. It specifies the key variables
showing their interrelationships. This is usually
represented in a diagram (theoretical paradigm /
conceptual paradigm) conceptual framework is not
necessary for qualitative research.
Hypotheses
What is it?
Hypotheses are tentative statements about a given
phenomenon. They serve as a tentative answer to one
or more of the research questions, and are subjected to
a statistical test.
Remember
1.The hypotheses should be stated in a
testable form.
Remember
2. The level of significance usually at .05
should be set before testing.
Remember
3. Both the research and null hypotheses
should be stated.
Remember
4. Qualitative research does not test
hypotheses.
Definition of Terms
What is it?
Clear definition should be stated for all important
variables, especially if these are to be measured by
means of specific instruments or a combination of
devices.
This includes conceptual and operational definition
of important terms as used in the study.
What is it?
This section does not appear in qualitative
research.
