LEED Version 3

Editor's Notes

  • #2: LEED Version 3, LEED 2009.Presented at 2009 Region VI CRC in Des Moines, Iowa.Benjamin Skelton, P.E. LEED APMay 8, 2009Licensed PE in State of IllinoisLEED Accredited ProfessionalACG Certified Commissioning AgentWelcome everyone to the final session of the High Performing Buildings track. The schedule you have lists a couple of possible topics for this presentation. We’re not going to be specifically covering HPB Benchmarking, instead I’ll present a brief overview of LEED v3 and touch on some of the changes and they effect ASHRAE standards. Then we’re going to transition this session into a panel discussion. For that, we’ve assembled the opposite of an expert panel. More like “a couple of guys” that can attempt field your questions on LEED, ASHRAE Standards in LEED, Commissioning and Energy Modeling. We’re really hoping to turn that into an open forum. Before we get started, make sure you sign in to get your PDH’s.Introductions:The new version of LEED was released on April 27.
  • #3: Each credit is considered a “book” and is the same across all rating systems. Done to eliminate inconsistencies.GBCI will now handle professional accreditation and building certification. The weighting of credits was changed. Will have a significant impact on energy performance.Regional bonus credits added.Won’t change for 2-years (2011)
  • #4: GBCI now manages the accreditation process as well as certification.USGBC manages the reference guides, rating systems and education.Ten certified organizations will perform reviews as opposed to individuals.
  • #5: You can no longer register for the old LEED version exams. Tests continue until June 30, 2009.New LEED exams are coming out after the 30th. GBCIwill define education with three levels of knowledge:Basic 100 level, LEED Green AssociateAdvanced 200 levelExtraordinary 300 levelTier I, the LEED Green Associate, is a computer-based, multiple-choice examination; you will have 2 hours to complete the exam. This core knowledge exam is also part 1 of the LEED AP examinations. If you become eligible to take the LEED AP exam and have maintained your LEED Green Associate credential, you will not have to take this exam again.Tier II, the LEED AP with specialty, will be two parts. The exams are multiple-choice and computer-based. The first part will be the core knowledge exam (taken by Tier I, LEED Green Associates) about green building and general knowledge about the LEED Rating System. The second part will be a specialty exam depending on the track you choose. You will have 4 hours to complete both parts of the exam.Existing LEED AP’s have three options for transition.LEED AP with Specialty by enrollmentAgree to Credentialing Maintenance ProgramLEED AP with Specialty by examAgree to Credentialing Maintenance ProgramLEED APDo NothingCredentialing Maintenance Program (CMP) 30 hours of professional training with 6 LEED specific
  • #6: GBCI will now handle project certification.Basic process doesn’t changeReviewers are being trained now, not the same reviewers as before.Old CIR’s don’t apply.
  • #7: Three reference guides available, each with several project specific rating systemsGreen Building Design & ConstructionGreen Interior Design & ConstructionGreen Building Operations & Maintenance
  • #8: Rollout set to be completed later this year.
  • #9: Focus on changes to LEED NC.
  • #10: Points are now based on 100 points
  • #11: Credit weighting was adjusted.Energy and Atmosphere has shifted, high performance buildings more important than ever.
  • #12: WE Prerequisite 1 – 20% Water Use Reduction. This was previously a point.WE Cr3 – Water Use Reduction now offers additional points for 35% & 40%Baseline is Energy Policy Act of 1992Added in EPA of 1995 & International Plumbing Code 2006
  • #13: ASHRAE 90.1-2007 is now the baseline for energy models.Fan sizing is less stringent.Efficiencies are better.
  • #14: Now based on a scale of 1-19 points.ASHRAE contributes to the smaller projects with the AEDG, but if you’re using the guide, do the model. It’s cheap points!Based on PRM method defined by ASHRAE 90.1-2007 Appendix G.Modeling Tools AvailableDOE-2Trane Trace 700EnergyPlusCarrier HAP-E20 IIOr others
  • #15: Bob?EA 3 – Enhanced Commissioning – No longer does the commissioning agent need fully to be third party. The LEED consultant may act as the CxA if they are providing no sustainable design or construction guidance or oversight or if their contract is held entirely by the owner. An added a caveat from LEED NC 2.2’s commissioning prerequisite for the 2009 version of enhanced commissioning is of great importance to MCAA contractors: For projects smaller than 50,000 gross square feet, the CxA may include qualified persons on the design or construction teams who have the required experience.
  • #16: ASHRAE 62.1-2007 is the baseline standard.Fan tracking and building pressurization monitoring are no longer acceptable for this credit, an actual air flow device such as a pitot tube, venturi meter, rotating vane anemometers or mass flow sensors must be used. When airflow drops below 15% of design, the system has to adjust automatically or alarm.
  • #17: Each zip code gets six options for a regional bonus credit.Projects can qualify for four points.Des Moines Credits: SSc4(50%) Alternative TransportationSSc6Stormwater DesignSSc7.2 Heat Island Effect - RoofWEc2(30%) Water EfficiencyMRc5 Regional MaterialsMRc7 Certified Wood
