 Upgrade network access
 Provide multiple network and Internet access
points in every classroom, study area, and social
      meeting place on campus
 Access can be wired or wireless, depending on the
physical constraints within the buildings and the
      budget
 Upgrade the display technologies
     Smart board
     Flat screen display
     Document camera
 Customized to each classroom and learning
    area need
 Answer: The Digital Divide
 “Educators have a responsibility to ensure
that all students have sufficient access to
computers and the Internet, regardless of
    gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic
    background, and intellectual or physical
    ability” (Bitter & Legacy, 2008, p. 135).
What are the Risks?
 We need to provide
 Access to appropriate servers/files only
 Protection from malware (viruses, spyware, spam,
     phishing)
 “A copyright gives the creator the exclusive
    right to reproduce, distribute, perform,
display, or license his or her work” (Bitter &
    Legacy, 2008, p. 135).
 Copyright protection is enforced for the lifetime
of the creator plus 70 years.
 To benefit society, especially education.
 It was not created to protect the creators of
    the intellectual property
 Fair Use is an exception to copyright law
 Fair use includes use of the material for
    criticism, comment, news reporting,
teaching, scholarship or research (Bitter &
    Legacy, 2008).
 In an Internet video, (n.d.) the presenter
provides a quick explanation of what
plagiarism is and how rampant it is in our
  society.

 Care must be taken to keep a professional
    online persona
 “Friending” students can give a negative
    persception
 Allowing students access to personal faculty
    information can be detrimental
 Allowing faculty access to personal student
    information can be detrimental
How Do We Minimize
 the Risks?
 Faculty and student education are needed on
intellectual property, copyright, fair use, and
    privacy policies.
 Teachers are role models and need to be
reminded of this and rewarded for their
    conduct.
 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)
 Updated US copyright law for the digital age
 Teach Act of 2002
 Requires technology be implemented that
prevents unlawful copying and distribution of
     copyrighted material
 Purpose:
 Establishing and enforcing rules regarding computer
      and network use.
 Enforcement:
 We need to create and distribute a written policy and
have users sign off that they've received and read it.
 Content:
 AUP content must be clearly written & enforceable
 Updated as the institution grows/changes
 The following are some examples of
information commonly found in an AUP
 Who can use the network and Internet access
 Why internet access is available
 Acceptable and unacceptable use of the internet
 Security procedures that must be followed
 Copyright laws that are enforced
 Methods to report inappropriate use
 Consequences if AUP policy is not followed
