Lesson 1
Obj: Students will use a number line to compare and order
integers.
Notes
Natural (counting) numbers = (1, 2, 3, 4, …)
Whole numbers = (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, …)
Integers = (…-4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, …)
Questions:
Do natural numbers have a 0?
Do whole numbers have negative numbers?
Is zero an integer?
Is zero a counting number?
Why does a number line have arrows at each end?
Why do you think 0 is called the origin?
Notes
• Absolute value – how far a number is away from 0 on a
number line.
Example:
3 = −3 = 6 = −6 =
100 = −2000 = 57 = −1 =
Practice
• Arrange these integers in order from least to greatest.
-3, 3, 0, 1 2, -1, 4, 0 0, -2, 5, -7
• Compare < , >, =
-3 -1 −3 −1 2 -5
-7 0 −2 −3 6 -10
