The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood, and blood vessels. The heart pumps blood through arteries, capillaries, and veins to deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues throughout the body. Blood contains plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The circulatory system transports blood through two circuits - systemic circulation throughout the body and pulmonary circulation between the heart and lungs. Common diseases of the circulatory system include anemia, leukemia, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, coronary heart disease, and rheumatic heart disease.
