The skeletal system is composed of bones, cartilages, ligaments and tissues that perform essential functions. It is divided into the axial skeleton and appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton includes the skull, backbone, breastbone and ribs and protects delicate organs. The appendicular skeleton includes the bones of the limbs and consists of 126 bones including shoulder bones, collar bones, arm bones, hip bones and leg bones. Bones are living tissues that contain calcium and collagen. They are connected by joints, tendons, ligaments and cartilage which allow different types of movement. Common bone injuries include sprains, fractures and dislocations. Bone diseases and proper bone health are also discussed.
