Lesson #5
A: To begin this lesson, there will be a group reading to help bring in the lesson and
do a short overview with the students. This will be a good time to have a refresher
of the week’s previous lesson. To get the students going, there will be a reading of
the book The Great Graph Contest.
S: Students will be able to distinguish the elements and characteristics of the three
different types of graphs by creating a master list of characteristics that are found in
each or characteristics in each individual graph. Students will be exploring this
through the read aloud activity, reviewing their conversations on Zello, and by
forming with a group to create a robot that displays a graph. This will be completed
with 95% accuracy by the end of the tenth day.
S: The technology that will be used in this lesson is the robots, computers, Elmo, and
Smart board.
U: To prepare for this lesson, students will already have a robot kit at each group.
There will be explanations on how to build and operate the robots. Students will be
placed in a few groups and parents will be coming in to help.
R: Throughout this lesson, students will have a few opportunities to get involved
with classroom participation. There will be a lot of group work, discussions, and
sharing of ideas. There will be a time where students can comment on the book that
is being read at the beginning of class. Students are encouraged to talk to their Zello
partner and discuss the similarities and differences they find between the 3 types of
graphs. Parents and teachers will model how to work well with a team and how to
properly communicate with the team to get work done.
E: Evaluations will be made through observing group discussions and interaction/
participation in robot activity.
