Preparation for Foundation Production Unit 
G321 
1. Preliminary task 
Front page of a college magazine, featuring 
a photograph of a student in a medium 
close up. 
Must produce mock ups and layout of the 
contents page.
To develop ideas for preliminary 
task 
• What do you know , right now today about 
front covers? 
• Contents? 
• Create a list!
Feedback on magazines 
• Main feature/ story 
• Name/ title = masthead 
• Price/ barcode/ date/ issue/ QR code 
• Text – boxes 
• Borders 
• Image- relate to main feature / the genre/ the 
Target Audience – models look into camera 
• Sell line/ strap line 
• Range of font styles and sizes
Target Audience 
• How do you research your audience? 
• Audience research….focus group. 
• Ask each other a series of questions 
about creating a Brigg Sixth Form College 
magazine. 
• Make a note of all answers. Now go down 
to the common room and ask anyone 
down there your questions!
To develop ideas for preliminary

• Now… analyse your results. 
• What does your research tell you about 
masthead [ name of mag]/ Colour/ Image/ Content 
Did you ask males and females? 
Where there any surprises? 
Page 18/24 – read this as a class and then take a 
piece of A3 and design your front cover.

You will need a 2nd piece of A3 to design and plan 
your contents page [ portrait]
G321 Foundation production

• Can be done in pairs/ 
max 3 to group 
• If this is done in pairs or 
as a group each 
individual must have own 
issue following the same 
house style and own 
individual blog. 
• Minimum: Four images 
per candidate 
• All images must be 
original. 
• No found images 
permitted.

Section A Textual analysis and

Section B Institutions and audiences. 
[EG Working Titles/ Momentum/ 
Good Films & Blueprint film [Lincoln]
Terminology and needs…. 
During this course you will learn specific 
terminology. 
You will need: 
A glossary for the magazines – we will give you this 
A glossary for each section of the exam – these you 
will create. 
Therefore you will need a folder – if you don’t have 
one yet – BRING ONE IN NEXT TUESDAY of ask 
us for one!
To prepare for photography 
You will benefit from having/ 
bringing in your own digital 
camera. 
Bring it in next Tuesday! 
Not a mobile phone!
Saving files and mini lessons 
You will need a USB memory stick – have 
this for next Tuesday [ Amazon/ Play.com] 
After your first Adobe lesson….You must 
book mini lessons with Mrs Beasley for 
photography and Adobe 
You must always ask for help with software 
and hardware – never plough on regardless!
