This document presents a phenomenological research study exploring the lived experiences of individuals who use speech generating communication devices (SGCDs) to speak. It shares excerpts from interviews and writings of SGCD users describing both the challenges and benefits of using these devices. While SGCDs allow for voicing one's thoughts, connecting with others, and finding identity, the experience also involves difficulties with multitasking conversations and not feeling one's voice is fully their own. Overall, the study seeks to understand what it is truly like to talk using a machine from the perspective of those who rely on assistive technology.
