WebQuests & Level 3 Thinking
Two Questions What is the main difference between the following two questions:  What did you learn today? What was the most useful thing you learned today?
Level 3 Thinking~~ Dynamic Thinking Synthesis  Evaluation
Level 3 Thinking~~  Synthesis The ability to recombine constituent parts into new and significant relationships to create a new whole Envisioning Inventing Rearranging
Synthesis Discussing "what if" situations Predicting and drawing conclusions Creating fresh answers or new ideas Designing and creating new products
Level 3 Thinking~~  Evaluation The ability to assess the value of the new product by devising one’s own evaluation system or by using another’s system
Evaluation Making recommendations Assessing value, judging  Making choices Critiquing ideas Justifying a decision or course of action
Level 3 Thinking~~  Evaluation Could there have been a better solution to..?  How effective is ..?  What would you recommend..?
WebQuests Require Higher Level Thinking Skills- synthesis, analysis, problem-solving, creativity and/or judgment Wrapped around a doable and interesting task (a scaled down version of things that adults do as citizens or workers) Based on the ideas of inquiry and constructivism Makes good use of the web
WebQuests Incorporate cooperative and collaborative learning Aren't a research report or a step-by-step science or math  Aren’t  just a series of web-based experiences
Part 1~~  Introduction-- The “ H ook” A preview of what is to come  Setting the stage
Part 2~~  The Task Assignment details  Often numbered lists of items to complete
Part 3~~ The Process~~The “Meat” Collaboration  Development of action plans  Exploration of solutions to the problem
Part 4~~ The Resources Links Search Engines & search tips Print resources
Part 5~~  Evaluation Usually a rubric-- a chart listing goals for the quest and the standards by which performance will be measured.
Part 6~~  Conclusion A brief summary, usually congratulatory in tone, that concludes the project
Part 7~~  Teachers’ Page  (optional) Information to assist other educators to adapt the quest to their curriculum
