How to Present Your Research
Project on Friday
Requirements
 Must be presented in PowerPoint
 1st Slide is title slide
 2nd slide is a 250 word structured abstract
 Abstract must use the following headings
 Title and Author(s)
 Objectives
 Methods
 Results
 Conclusions
Ingredients of the Abstract
 Title: 10-12 words that capture the relevance and
essence of research
 Objective: Purpose of your research – hypothesis,
outline problem, concept or question
 Methods: Study design, sampling techniques, power
analysis, data collection procedures, data analysis
technique, IRB approval
 Results: Expected results and how they answer the
research question, address limitations
 Conclusion: How evidence supports purpose, and
implications for future research
Preparing for Friday
 10 minute presentation
 Rehearse and rehearse some more
 Present to mentor or program director
 Focus mainly on the methods section
 We’ll want to hear specifics about:
 Research design (why you chose it)
 Anticipated effect size and power analysis
 Sample selected (inclusion, exclusion)
 Data collection techniques
 Coding for variables
 Statistical techniques used
Preparing for Friday (cont.)
 Present the results
 State how you will present your findings
 Depict Table 1
 Depict Table 2
 State how your findings support your hypothesis
 Identify the statistical test that will demonstrate the effect you
expect to find
 Interpret the results of the statistical test
Conclusions
 How your study contributes to the research
 Strengths and limitations of the study (anticipate
design problems, sample size problems, possible
sources of bias, confounding, internal and external
validity)
And Finally….
 Be grateful you finished this project
 Congratulate yourself for completing the course
 Treat yourself to something fun over the weekend
