Keep

We
  always
  are
  going

  of
  our

1.4)
  Action
  on
  the
  frame.

This
  is
  more
  related
  to
  movement
  but
  when
  there
  is
  action
  let’s
  just
  keep

ourselves
  as
  witnesses,
  framing
  it
  as
  a
  nice
  picture
  rather
  than
  following
  it.

1.5)
  Rear/front
  camera.
  We
  will
  generally
  use
  the
  rear
  camera,
  but

make
  also
  use
  of
  the
  front
  facing
  camera.
  Though
  clearly
  not
  as
  good
  as
  the
  HD

rear
  facing
  camera,
  the
  front
  camera
  is
  nicely
  colour

  and
  is
  certainly

good
  enough

  reaction

1.6)
  Eye
  contact.
  The
  most
  important
  thing
  in
  an

interview,
  and
  in
  any
  character
  driven
  video.

  2)
  LIGHTING

2.1)
  Indoors
  or
  outdoors

Hint:
  what’s
  the
  main
  thing
  that
  will
  make
  us
  decide
  for
  one
  thing
  or
  another?

In
  these
  cameras
  (ipad/iphone)
  you’ll
  try
  to
  shoot
  always
  outdoors,
  but
  sound

will
  be
  the
  key
  factor
  that
  will
  make
  us
  decide
  for
  one
  place
  or
  the
  other.

INDOORS:

  Main
  rule:
  we
  will
  avoid
  backlights
  and
  we
  will
  concentrate
  on

lighting
  the
  face
  of
  the
  interviewee

We
  will
  take
  advantage
  of
  the
  natural
  light
  and
  use
  windows
  to
  light
  the
  face
  of

the
  subject.

HINT:
  Were
  the
  main
  lighting
  has
  to
  be?

OUTDOORS:

The
  sun
  in
  advantage
  but
  not
  too
  exposed.

The
  rule
  is
  to
  look
  for
  a
  shade
  to
  place
  the
  subject
  where
  subject
  is
  protected
  but

some
  sun
  light
  goes
  to
  the
  face
  anyway.

The
  nicest
  time
  to
  shoot
  it’s
  also
  very
  early
  in
  the
  morning
  or
  late
  in
  the

afternoon
  (the
  golden
  hour),
  so
  take
  advantage
  of
  this
  when
  filming
  

2.2)
  White
  balance:

When
  not
  shooting
  in
  an
  ipad
  and
  shooting
  in
  a
  standard
  camera,
  we
  will
  activate

the
  auto
  white
  balance
  option
  so
  the
  camera
  itself
  will
  make
  the
  balance.

2.3)
  Avoiding
  moving
  from
  one
  lighting
  situation
  to

another
  one

The
  camera
  takes
  quite
  a
  while
  to
  adjust
  to
  a
  new
  scene
  with
  different
  light

levels.
  Give
  the
  iPad
  time
  to
  readjust
  before
  you
  begin
  your
  shot.
  Don't
  move

from
  one
  lighting
  situation
  to
  another
  in
  one
  continuous
  shot
  unless
  you
  have
  no

other
  option.

  3)
  STABILITY/MOVEMENT

3.1)

  Keep
  steady

  When
  doing
  interviews,
  it
  is
  important
  to
  keep
  steady.

Hint:
  when
  looking
  for
  steadiness,
  we
  will
  use
  our
  own
  body.
  Like
  in
  life,
  it’s
  all

about
  the
  hips!

3.2)

  Movement
  is
  also
  narrative

Movements
  have
  to
  have
  a
  reason
  to
  exist,
  since
  movements
  also
  explain
  things.

zoom
  in
  and
  zoom
  out
  because
  you
  think
  it’s
  funny,
  because
  it’s
  not,
  and

audience
  gets
  dizzy!

3.3)
  Don’t
  follow
  actions,
  just
  ‘portrait’
  them

We
  won’t
  follow
  an
  action
  since
  we
  are
  not
  professional
  cameras,
  but
  we
  will
  try

to
  just
  ‘portrait’
  it.

3.4)
  Find
  a
  point
  to
  rely
  on

A
  tripod,
  a
  table
  or
  your
  knee…
  But
  make
  sure
  your
  shoot
  does
  not
  get
  too
  shaky!

BASIC  FILMING  AND  INTERVIEWING  CONCEPTS  AND  SOME  USEFUL  VIDEO  LINKS   LIBMARKT  TRAINING,  18TH  OCT  2013     MARIONA  GUIU  0406644786    marionaguiu@gmail.com                                                                                                                        A.-  BASIC  RULES       4  THINGS  TO  FOCUS   FLSS     FRAMING   LIGHTING   STABILITY  /  MOVEMENT   SOUND                                                                                                  1  COMPOSITION/FRAMING     First  of  all,  and  most  importantly:  Locate  lens  and  mic  in  your  device,  and   Keep  lens  and  mic  clear.     1.1) Three  thirds     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlxpd-‐thSMU   We  always  are  going  to  put  the  important  things  of  our  shoot  where  the   intersection  meets.       1.2) Keep  horizontal   1.3)   SAY  NO  TO  VERTICAL  VIDEOS!!!!     1.4) Avoiding  distracting  backgrounds,  and  distracting   outfits     http://thebeginnerslens.com/digital-‐photography/get-‐the-‐background-‐ right.html     • .  the  main  subject  in  different  colour/position  than  the  background     • .  keep  also  branding  /  stripes  /  dots  out  ,and  try  to  go  for  plain  colours,   different  from  the  background:  We  are  not  advertising  NIKE!     • Deep  backgrounds,  like  a  hallway  are  always  very  successful.     1.4)  Action  on  the  frame.   This  is  more  related  to  movement  but  when  there  is  action  let’s  just  keep   ourselves  as  witnesses,  framing  it  as  a  nice  picture  rather  than  following  it.
  • 2. 1.5)  Rear/front  camera.  We  will  generally  use  the  rear  camera,  but   make  also  use  of  the  front  facing  camera.  Though  clearly  not  as  good  as  the  HD   rear  facing  camera,  the  front  camera  is  nicely  colour  balanced  and  is  certainly   good  enough  for  the  occasional  commentary  or  reaction  shot.       1.6)  Eye  contact.  The  most  important  thing  in  an   interview,  and  in  any  character  driven  video.                                                                                                                                                                                  2)  LIGHTING     2.1)  Indoors  or  outdoors     Hint:  what’s  the  main  thing  that  will  make  us  decide  for  one  thing  or  another?     In  these  cameras  (ipad/iphone)  you’ll  try  to  shoot  always  outdoors,  but  sound   will  be  the  key  factor  that  will  make  us  decide  for  one  place  or  the  other.     INDOORS:    Main  rule:  we  will  avoid  backlights  and  we  will  concentrate  on   lighting  the  face  of  the  interviewee     We  will  take  advantage  of  the  natural  light  and  use  windows  to  light  the  face  of   the  subject.   HINT:  Were  the  main  lighting  has  to  be?     OUTDOORS:       The  sun  in  advantage  but  not  too  exposed.   The  rule  is  to  look  for  a  shade  to  place  the  subject  where  subject  is  protected  but   some  sun  light  goes  to  the  face  anyway.   http://syn.org.au/program/vidfest-‐workshops-‐ videos/episode/video/2011/05/03/video-‐5-‐lighting     The  nicest  time  to  shoot  it’s  also  very  early  in  the  morning  or  late  in  the   afternoon  (the  golden  hour),  so  take  advantage  of  this  when  filming       2.2)  White  balance:   When  not  shooting  in  an  ipad  and  shooting  in  a  standard  camera,  we  will  activate   the  auto  white  balance  option  so  the  camera  itself  will  make  the  balance.     2.3)  Avoiding  moving  from  one  lighting  situation  to   another  one     The  camera  takes  quite  a  while  to  adjust  to  a  new  scene  with  different  light   levels.  Give  the  iPad  time  to  readjust  before  you  begin  your  shot.  Don't  move
  • 3. from  one  lighting  situation  to  another  in  one  continuous  shot  unless  you  have  no   other  option.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        3)  STABILITY/MOVEMENT       3.1)    Keep  steady      When  doing  interviews,  it  is  important  to  keep  steady.     Hint:  when  looking  for  steadiness,  we  will  use  our  own  body.  Like  in  life,  it’s  all   about  the  hips!     3.2)    Movement  is  also  narrative     Movements  have  to  have  a  reason  to  exist,  since  movements  also  explain  things.   zoom  in  and  zoom  out  because  you  think  it’s  funny,  because  it’s  not,  and   audience  gets  dizzy!     3.3)  Don’t  follow  actions,  just  ‘portrait’  them     We  won’t  follow  an  action  since  we  are  not  professional  cameras,  but  we  will  try   to  just  ‘portrait’  it.     3.4)  Find  a  point  to  rely  on     A  tripod,  a  table  or  your  knee…  But  make  sure  your  shoot  does  not  get  too  shaky!                                                                                                                                                                      4)  SOUND     Sound  makes  the  video  awesome  or  awful!   4.1.-  First  of  all,  locate  mics  on  your  devices  and  not  cover  them     On  iphones.  Right  side  is  the  speaker,  left  side  is  the  microphone.   On  ipads.    On  the  very  top     4.2.-  Choose  the  location  according  the  background  sound.  A  distracting  sound   ruins  a  video,  no  matter  how  amazing  the  location  is.     4.-3  keep  close  to  your  subject.    keep  close  to  your  subject.    keep  close  to   your  subject!!!!    Alternatives  (the  mic  of  your  iphone  earphones).     4.4.-  You  can  change  location  is  the  sound  is  very  ugly,  or  simply  ask  people   around  to  shut  up  for  a  while!
  • 4.                                                                            B.-  BASIC  CREATIVE  RULES     When  filming  an  interview:     http://12starsmedia.com/blog/how-to-shoot-a-video-interview-4-tips-to- compose-the-shot     We  will  try  to  avoid  to  film  right  after  a  window  or  a  wall.  Otherwhise  it  will  be   like  a  passport  photo.   Instead  we  always  will  look  for  a  wide  depth  of  field.       2  types  of  footage:     Cutaways:  examples  of  cuataways.  (book  /  hands)   Why  do  we  shoot  cutaways?   When  do  we  shoot  cuataways?     Main  footage:  examples  of  main  footage       Content:       1.-‐  Include  always  the  question  in  your  answer  so  it’s  easier  to  edit.     2.-‐  Which  do  you  think  they  are  the  main  questions  in  a  book  review?     3..-‐  Personal  questions  are  always  very  compelling,  so  use  them  and  illustrate   them  with  cutaways.  Remember,  we  are  all  voyeurs  and  enjoy  imagining!  (That’s   why  we  also  like  reading).       BE  SUGGESTIVE  AND  DON’T  BE  SCARED  OF  EMOTIONS!                      HAPPY  INSPIRING  VIDEOS!
