After this session, you should be able to:
• Identify the location of the LibGuide for SPC 2608 on the USF Library web site
• Perform a basic search in 3 guide databases
• Interpret a basic search result to identify an article citation, availability of full
text, and resource format
• Distinguish between primary and secondary sources
• Employ the CRAAP test to evaluate found sources
• Create a verbal citation
• Identify 3 ways to contact a librarian to obtain additional assistance​

1. Navigate to http://lib.usf.edu
2. Click on Guides
3. Click “Course Guides A-Z”
4. Click “Guides M-Z”
5. Locate SPC 2608
Evaluating Sources
The CRAAP Test
● Currency: When was the article published?
● Relevancy: How much does it pertain to your topic?
● Authority: Who is the author? What are their credentials?
● Accuracy: Where does the information come from? Is it cited?
Supported by evidence?
● Purpose: Is the author seeking to inform? Persuade? Sell something?
Activity: Critiquing the News
1. Using Access World News, search for an article
pertaining to your topic.
1. Select an article from your results list and keep it
visible on your computer screen.
1. Invite your partner to critique the article using the
CRAAP test
Primary vs. Secondary Sources
What are primary sources?
● Original, first-hand accounts of events or scientific
experiments/discoveries. Include:
o Diaries, autobiographies, government documents, scientific
reports, interviews, etc.
What are secondary sources?
● Analysis and/or interpretation of primary sources, or second-hand
accounts. Include:
o Biographies, histories, literary criticism, literature reviews, analysis of
clinical trials, etc.
Activity: Researching Examples
Vital Speeches of the
Day is a database that
indexes popular speeches
from 1934 to present day
In your groups:
1. Locate one speech that
reflects your topic
2. Choose one sentence that
you feel is an example of a
persuasive point
3. Share with the class
Searching CQ Researcher
● Search by keyword
● Interpreting search results
o Parts of the citation
o Full text availability
o Format
● What kinds of sources would you expect to find?
o Primary Sources
o Secondary Sources
o Reports
Activity: Creating Verbal Citations
Instructions:
• Research the "Education" report
in CQ Researcher
• Write one sentence in support of
a persuasive report fact, using a
verbal citation
• Present your verbal citation
sentence in class
Useful for:
● Any public speaking venue
● Persuading your audience with
credible facts
Example:
"A recent study published in X
REPORT shows that BLANK is
important to Americans..."
