LibreOffice is a free and open-source office suite that can be used as an alternative to Microsoft Office. It was originally forked from OpenOffice in 2010 when the developers left after Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems. LibreOffice has become the default office suite installed on many Linux distributions and is also available for Windows and Mac. While the interface is more similar to older versions of Microsoft Office, LibreOffice documents can be saved in formats compatible with Microsoft Office and it can open and edit Microsoft file formats.
