Agenda What is Open Source (OSS, FOSS)? How did Meadville develop into an OSS library? What tools work for libraries? What are the Benefits/Caveats? What to look for in an OS project Why is OSS important for libraries?
How They Got Started and  Where They are Now
Timeline 1998-1999:  Began using floppy-based Linux routers to share dialup connections in each library. 1999:  Hired a consultant to provide Cindy with Linux training. 1999-2000:  Began using OpenBSD to build a firewall/router for MPL Hired a consultant to train Cindy in using OpenBSD
Timeline 2000:  Began using LTSP ( Linux Terminal Server Project ) Allows reuse of old hardware 2001:  Kyle joins IT staff on a part time basis. 2000-2002:  Began using FOSS Internet filtering software. 2004-2005:  Began investing Open Source ILS systems to replace aging ILS.
Timeline 2005 Sponsored development of Koha to allow it to be used by libraries with large collections. Hired Kyle full time. Primary duties include Koha development. 2007-2008 Migrated all CCFLS libraries to Koha
Timeline 2007 Kyle investigates FOSS Internet kiosk management software  (OpenKiosk, OutKafe, etc) Kyle develops Libki, a new FOSS Internet kiosk management software. 2009 Kyle replaces aging phone system with Open Source SIP-based phone system. 2010 Upgraded to Koha 3.2
