Open Source Software and we the Information Professionals Ashok Kumar Satapathy Asst. Librarian, Dept. Head, BIT, Bhubaneswar E-mail: ashoksatapathy@yahoo.com Contact No. : 9437040513
What is OSS : According to Raymond (Raymond 2000) the definition of OSS is “Software that is freely redistributable and can readily be evolved and modified to fit changing needs” Open source is a term to describe the tradition of open standards shared source code collaborative development In the open source movement, openness implies on the ability to access and change the source code, at any time, to support a desired capability.
History of the Open Source: Richard Stallman is the founder of “Free Software Foundation”. GNU Project Software, a project that advocating the distribution of “free” software that has been operational since the mid 80’s. Since 1998, the open source software movement has become a revolution in software development. Linus Torvalds developed “Linux” during 1990 and then the “Open Source” concept was emerged.
OSS and Librarianship: Libraries do not exchange data and information for money. Libraries believe that free information will improve society. OSS principles are similar like libraries, both put a premium on “open access”. Both advocates for a “gift culture” and gain reputation.
OSS in Libraries: Daniel Chudnov has done a lot to raise awareness of OSS in libraries. He is the maintainer of the www.oss4lib.org domain as well as its mailing lists. On his site all the OSS related to libraries are listed. More than 100 software are listed in this site. OSS technology is growing slow but steady process within the library community.
Why to use OSS in Libraries: Budget constraint. Open access to information: Open access to Digital Repositories; Open access to Journals and Databases; Open courseware (E-learning) Open standard (Preservation) Since source code is available one can do lot of changes as per our requirement. Incorporate the software into the another programme to perform new functions.
Popular OSS in Libraries: Operating System: Ubuntu, Fedora, etc. Library Automation: NewGenLib, Koha, OpenBiblio, Avanti, etc. Digital Library: Greenstone, Dspace, EPrints, etc. There are various other OSS available for Multi Media, Desktop Publication and so on.
What is Library Automation: “ Library Automation” is a buzz word in the contemporary environment. It refers to the implementation of information and communications technologies (ICT) in the libraries & information centers. In other words, conversion of manual system into a specific MARC format which makes it suitable for cooperative networking and resource sharing among the libraries and information centers.
What is Library Automation: In simple terms, application of computer in the library for day-to-day routine work with a standardised format. Each modules integrated with unified interface. An integrated library system (ILS), also known as a library management system (LMS), is an enterprise resource planning system for a library, used to track items owned, orders made, bills paid, and patrons who have borrowed.
Need of Library Automation: Increased operational efficiencies of the library staff. Improve the quality, speed, accuracy, and effectiveness of services. Get better access to other networks on the Web. Facilitate wider access to information for their clients. Smooth the progress of wider dissemination of information products and services.
ILS and Library Automation OPAC OPAC OPAC OPAC On WEB MANAGEMENT END USER Cataloguing System Database Server Circulation System Serial Control System OPAC Acquisition System OPAC OPAC On LAN NETWORKING
What is Digital Library : Collection of digital objects (Text, Audio, Video, etc.) organised in such a way that end users retrieves exact document without any difficulties. A new way of dealing with knowledge by Preserving, Collecting, Organising, Propagating, Accessing, etc. or we can say an organised collection of digital information.
OSS and their Availabilities: Sourceforge.net owned by the Open Source Development Network Inc., provides a repository for Open Source Software Projects with over 60,000+ individual projects with 60 new ones being getting added everyday plus 600,000 user with 700 new ones joining everyday (2003). Apart from that UNESCO provides several individual projects on Open Source Software.
Different OSS Projects: Almost all the IIM and IITs implemented the OSS for Library Automation and Digital Libraries. Out of them some projects are available at: http://dspace.nitrkl.ac.in/dspace http://drtc.isibang.ac.in/DRTC/greenst one.html http://vidyanidhi.org.in etc.
We the information professionals should play an active role in the open source movement to develop the gift culture…
Thank U & Have a nice day
