LIGHT IS ENERGY LIGHT IS ONE OF THE FIVE FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS ( PANCHAMAHABHUTAS) LIGHT IS ESSENTIAL FOR BIOLOGICAL GROWTH LIGHT IS ESSENTIAL FOR VISUAL PERCEPTION
VISUAL ARTS Script Drawing / Painting Photography Sculpture Pottery / Ceramics Dance / Drama Cinema and ARCHITECTURE Basic Principles LIGHT & AESTHETICS
VISION: RESPONSE TO THE STIMULUS OF LIGHT PROPERTIES OF LIGHT LIGHT SCATTERS IN ALL DIRECTIONS IT LOOSES ENERGY AS IT SPREADS. LIGHT TRAVELS IN A STRAIGHT LINE THROUGH A GIVEN MEDIUM WHEN LIGHT STRIKES AN OBJECT IT IS – TRANSMITTED, REFLECTED OR ABSORBED DEPENDING ON TRANSPARENT, TRANSLUCENT, OPAQUE MEDIUM
SUN IS EARTH’S ONLY SOURCE OF NATURAL LIGHT VISIBLE SUNLIGHT IS A SMALL BAND WITHIN THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM OF SOLAR ENERGY V I B G Y O R ARE THE COMPONENTS OF WHITE SUNLIGHT
THE SUN MOVES FROM EAST TO WEST THROUGH THE DAY AND CHANGES IT’S PATH FROM NORTH TO SOUTH CAUSING SEASONS THIS VIRTUAL MOVEMENT OF THE SUN CAUSES A CONSTANT CHANGE IN THE DIRECTION, INTENSITY & QUALITY OF LIGHT CHANGE IN THE QUALITY OF LIGHT EVOKES DIFFERENT MOODS E W N S E E

LIGHT & ARCHITECTURE
ARCHITECTURE LIGHT & MOVEMENT The experience of Architecture is primarily Visual and Kinaesthetic. Architecture is image only in a drawing or photograph. As soon as it is built it becomes the scene And sometimes the scenario of Comings and goings,of gestures, Even of a succession of Sensations. Ar. (prof) Pierre von Meiss. ( ELEMENTS OF ARCHITECTURE)
ARCHITECTURE, INSIDE / OUTSIDE LIGHT, is the medium that reveals, FORM, SPACE, COLOUR & TEXTURE, SHADE & SHADOW, enhance it.

LIGHT & ARCHITECTURE         MOVEMENT OF THE SUN ( LIGHT, SHADE & SHADOWS,) CREATES EVERCHANGING PATTERNS, AND ANIMATES THE SPACE. The Daylight in the interior space depends upon the area of openings. Area of Openings for, Daylight requirement in a room is 1/8 th or 1/10 th of the area of the floor space. NO SPACE, ARCHITECTURALLY, IS A SPACE UNLESS IT HAS NATURAL LIGHT
DIFFERENT DEGREES OF ENCLOSURES signify DIFFERENT INTENSITIES OF LIGHT (QUALITIES) IN THE INTERIOR SPACE
Degree of Enclosure and Levels of illumination Pravesh Chowky Sabhamandap Garbhagriha The Lighting of spaces inside a temple is orchestrated such that Pravesh Chowky (i.e.Entrance Porch ) is semi – open with maximum light , Sabhamandap ( for worshippers) has moderate light with few openings . Garbhagriha (i.e. sanctury of God ) is permitted to have only a single opening i.e. door in front of the deity allowing light only on deity . This is for worshippers to concentrate fully on the deity. HINDU ACHITECTURE

Light is used to distinguish elements of the building from each other, like the shell shaped roof, which is separated from the wall by a narrow horizontal strip of light. Light reveals the rough texture of concrete. “ As you imagine, I use light freely; Light for me is the fundamental basis of Architecture, I compose with Light” Le Corbusier
LIGHT & ARCHITECTURE “ Cold climates have produced THE CLOSED BOX GOTHIC CATHEDRAL is an exception- It deals with LIGHT falling from great heights- The same feeling you get in the pine forests of Scandinavia. The tilt of your head awakens some primordial instinct. Perhaps the fear of Jove hurling down thunderbolts.” Ar. CHARLES CORREA

ARCHITECTURE MUST HAVE THE RELIGION OF LIGHT . A SENSE OF GIVER OF LIGHT AS THE GIVER OF ALL PRESENCES. EVERY BUILDING , EVERY ROOM MUST BE IN NATURAL LIGHT BECAUSE NATURAL LIGHT GIVES MOOD OF THE DAY. THE SEASON OF THE YEAR IS BROUGHT IN THE ROOM. IT CAN EVEN BE SAID THAT THE SUN NEVER KNEW HOW GREAT IT WAS UNTIL IT STRUCK THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING . WHEN LIGHT ENTERS A ROOM , IT IS YOUR LIGHT AND NOBODY ELSES. IT BELONGS TO THAT ROOM. • 109.
