Keys to Creating a Successful LinkedIn Profile
Purpose of Linkedin: “To connect the world’s professionals to make them more productive and
successful”.
3 Aspects of Linkedin
1. Optimizing Your Profile: With over 300 million users worldwide and more than
two new members joining every second, Linkedin is a casual way for business
professionals to represent themselves and network with one another.
a. Headline: Provide your full name, the company you currently work for and
your position. This makes it easy for people in your network to find you
and connect.
b. Picture: Use an up to date, high resolution, portrait picture where you look
professional but relaxed.
c. Summary: Under your headline, you should have a brief summary of your
professional career. In 3-5 sentences you can give a brief summary of
your personal life, education, completed goals, future goals, and maybe
share a personal interest.
d. Experience: This portion of your profile is similar to your resume. You
should write a few sentences to summarize your role at each position.
LinkedIn is your interactive online resume.
e. Courses: List courses that show your exposure and knowledge in areas
of relevance. Typically, these are higher level classes that specifically
relate to your field.
f. Projects: Have you managed a project? Do you write a blog? Has any of
your work been published? Post links to your work published on third party
sites.
g. Skills & Endorsements: Select relevant skills that you excel in to appear
on your profile’s page. When viewing someone else’s profile, click the +
button to give recognition for a skill they have demonstrated. Giving
endorsements can help strengthen connections with old colleagues.
h. Volunteer: Share charity events or activities you have volunteered for. It
is always a bonus to include pictures of you participating at an event. If
you have not participated in any volunteer work, share which causes you
care about.
i. Groups: Join groups for organizations you are a part of. This makes it
easier to find, connect, and communicate with people you may know.
2. Consuming & Sharing Content:
a. Follow channels with news that is relevant to you. This will keep the
articles that appear on your homepage relevant and useful. Also make
sure to follow your company’s page and stay up-to-date with industry
news.
b. Gain insights from top industry leaders by “following” their profile. For
example you can follow Bill Gates without him having to accept your
request to connect. This is a good way to find effective leadership
methods, read encouraging success stories, and find cutting edge
business articles.
c. Share useful articles to your network. If you find an article you find useful,
you can share it with the public or a specific group of connections. Sharing
articles shows what topics you are interested in and helps draw attention
to your profile. Be sure to include a link to the article and maybe include a
comment with your impression of the article.
3. Telling Your Company’s Story:
a. Share company news and repost articles posted from your company’s
website or LinkedIn page. For example you may want to share job
openings or a positive article about your company. Sharing company news
will help drive views to the company page.
b. Connect with your company: When LinkedIn members follow their
company, they will automatically show up on the organization’s network.
Adding co-workers to your LinkedIn network strengthen both your profile
and your relationship with your fellow employees.
Reveal your company culture to encourage brand advocacy. Let people know what
Flowers Foods does and what the Flowers way is. Showing the human side of your
company creates trust with your followers and your company.
