The Little Bookshelf program, in partnership with the Junior League of Baton Rouge, aims to promote early literacy by providing free books to low-income families with newborns. Over four years, the program has served hundreds of families through community events, reading corners, and fun activities. The initiative focuses on helping parents develop literacy skills in their children from an early age by making reading accessible and enjoyable.

- 1. THE LITTLE BOOKSHELF PROGRAM and our partnership with Junior League of Baton Rouge
- 2. The Little Bookshelf Program is about encouraging parents to read to children.
- 3. Our core program provides low income families with a newborn 12 free books to support them in reading to their baby from birth.
- 4. We serve dads! We serve moms!
- 5. More dads! And more moms!
- 6. We have served hundreds of families! All receiving books to read to their babies during infancy!
- 7. In addition to providing free books to low-income families, we have work together to promote early literacy through reading to children!
- 8. We have done this… …at LSU AgCenter’s AgMagic …and at Storytime at Burden …in several of its gardens!
- 9. We have even dressed up in costume on occasion to make it more fun for the kids!
- 10. You might ask, how did this happen?
- 11. Well, let me tell you a story!
- 12. Once upon a time there was a partnership… …between the Junior League of Baton Rouge and LSU AgCenter’s Little Bookshelf Program!
- 13. A partnership for over 4 years! Providing books to parents to read to The partners encourage early literacy! their children as well as tips about reading!
- 14. THE PARTNERS WORK TOGETHER TO PROMOTE EARLY LITERACY IN OUR COMMUNITY
- 15. We prepare lots of book to distribute to low-income families with newborns!
- 16. Books, books & more books! Tens of thousands of books!
- 17. We have training meetings!
- 18. And we have planning meetings!
- 20. We promote literacy at many special community events!
- 21. At the LSU Preschool Lab… At Dr. Seuss birthday events at EHS …and at LSU AgCenter’s AgMagic and taping public service announcements
- 22. At LA Book Festival! At Burden Center Garden Fest!
- 23. One of our most recent endeavors!
- 24. Lots of fun!
- 25. Lots and lots of fun!
- 26. With crafts… …and local a celebrity storyteller… …and stories for kids …and more crafts for kids!
- 27. Some of the books we read included…
- 28. The crafts ranged from ladybugs… To Lorax puppets To butterflies! To crowns!
- 29. The sandwich board costumes we made were such fun for readings of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad books!
- 30. The costumes were a hit!
- 31. Another new activity for us this year was setting up reading corners at eleven classrooms at the YWCA Early Head Start ARC and Glen Oaks Centers
- 32. We are so proud… …of our reading corners at Early Head Start Centers!
- 33. We are having such… …rewarding experiences!
- 34. But the most important aspect of the partnership is getting those free books to children whose families might not otherwise be able to afford them!
- 35. Because its about helping parents help their kids to be literate ever after!
