Logistical Requirements for Implementing Distance Education Programmes The University of Zambia Experience By  Godfrey Mwewa Lecturer/Coordinator (student Services) DDE, University of Zambia
What is Educational Technology ‘Tools used in formal educational practice to disseminate, illustrate, communicate, or immerse learners and teachers in activities purposively designed to induce learning’. (Garrison and Anderson, 2003) Distance education/eLearning considered as a complex system composed of institutional, individual, technical and social components.
Teaching presence The frame of e-learning extends interaction, choice, and movement, and this has a liberating and transformational effect on approaches to teaching.
The technology of e-learning Internet and on-line learning are on continuum of technology in education that extends to: Clay tablets Slate drawing boards Handmade paper and Abacus
Generations of Distance Education Technology   Ecological view of eLearning First generation:  printed textbook and course guide- conversational materials   Second generation: retained independent study- Radio and TV Third generation: Asynchronous and Synchronous human interaction- audio, video & Computer Mediated Conferencing  (CMC)
Generations of DE Technology Cont’d Fourth generation: combines 1 st  three; retrievable;  development and delivery packages such as WebCT, Blackboard,  Moodle , lotus Notes. Fifth generation:  ‘intelligent functions’ flexible learning model.’  Additions to 4G: automated responses e.g. FAQ and access via ‘portals’ to campus-based resources and services.
