The shearer is a machine used in longwall mining that cuts coal from the coal seam. It runs back and forth along the face on armored conveyors, taking cuts with horizontal cutting drums during each pass. The cut coal spills onto the conveyor and is transported from the mine. As it moves, the shearer also powers hydraulic roof supports that move forward to prop up the newly exposed roof. There are different types of shearers that vary based on the number of cutting drums and ability to move laterally, to accommodate different coal seam thicknesses. Safety features automatically stop operations in hazardous conditions.
