Looking into existing media- Blink
182 and A Day To Remember
Blink 182- all the small things
The shots begins with an image of the
typical boy band in white suits and tanned
skin. This is shows the video will be
mocking other music genres straight
away. There is a long focus pull to link into
the next shot- a panning shot of
screaming girls (no doubt their adoring
fans).
There is then a shot of one of the band
members mocking his fans as he dances in the
centre of them in small underwear- these are
also white to follow the theme. It cuts away to
another shot further mocking the pop culture
as one of the band members is practicing a
dance routine in provocative clothing and
dancing sexually. This is common in women's
music videos.
There’s then a sense of pop punk normality as
there’s a panning shot of the band in their
normal skater baggy clothes playing the song.
It’s a long angle connoting that pop punk is
better than the other genres they were
mocking. The mixture of the characters and
then shots of the band looking “normal”
continues until the chorus in reached, in which
new characters are added.
After this there’s a shot of the band
with bad teeth and bright clothes. As
they rub their nipples and pull
strange faces it shows that everyone
in the industry feels they need to be
sexualised to be noticed.
The video further mocks the boy band
imagery as shots of the band trying to
look emotional and seductive are added
on the beach and edited into black and
white. This is them mocking other boy
bands trying to look “deep” and intelligent
when in reality they are not.
Throughout the video- what evidence
is there that it’s a parody?
• Being attacked by a dog
• Sucking off a telescope (mocking seductive videos)
• Silly costumes
• Dancing in underwear
• Sexual showering is actually a man pouring a
bucket over the band members head
• Trying to look sexual whilst on the toilet
• Mocking tattoos and people acting tough (mocking rock music)
• Banana costume
• Girl saying she’s pregnant to get boy bands
attention
• Dance routines
• Dressing up as a woman
• Running naked on a beach
Conventions found
Overall, it was clear the video was aiming to
mock other music videos, especially the most
common and popular videos. Not only did it
mock previous videos it also mocked other
music genres. It was fun, and didn’t take itself
too seriously. it’s a memorable video with bright
colours and bright lighting.
A day to remember- all I want
The video begins with an extreme close up
focus pull of a number of news articles with
the bands name on and a microphone. A
shot reveals a hand writing song lyrics. A
jump cut reveals the whole body of the
man, and a panning shot reveals the rest of
the band surrounded by the news paper
clippings. There’s certain close ups on band
members and instruments for effect. The
lighting is low key creating shadows.

Lyrics appear on screen with
pictures linked to the lyrics. This is
linked to the man writing at the
beginning like he’s imagining this
as he writes in his journal almost.
Some drawings simply over
dramatize the bands movements
as they play.
It then cuts to individual shots of
different people not linked to the bandbut from the same genre of music
requiring an active audience. They’re in
different locations, but the writing and
drawings continue.
This continues and the cuts to a very unstereotyplicaly looking man in a fur coat
pulling funny faces. This contrasts with
the next band wearing the typical baggy
clothes but smashing up their
surroundings and looking like they’re
having fun.
Throughout the video this continues but
with constantly changing artists. The fast
pace editing keeps the audience
interested, and if they’re familiar with
the genre they want to continue
watching in order to see if they can spot
a band they particularly enjoy.
All I want- link to Goodwin?
Goodwin demonstrated that music was edited to fit
the music- edited on beat to make it look neat and
effective- however this was only seen in the first
few seconds of the video. As soon as the other
bands are edited into the song there is no real order
to the way it has been edited. This creates a pop
punk feel to the video as it goes against the rules
and is almost mocking other videos that need to
follow the theory. It considers itself better as it
doesn’t follow the rules making it seem more fun
and light.
Conventions found
This video was fun and entertaining, as well as
different through the use of the writing and
doubling. It required an active audience to
watch the video and understand who the other
artists are, making it have a niche target
audience.
There was no real narrative, just a collection of
random and fun shots which fitted the music
and style effectivly.
