Chicago’s Sweet Candy History with Leslie Goddard, PhD, popular
speaker, author, actress, and historian
Leslie Goddard, who charmed the Levy crowd during her lecture about
Marshall Field’s, will speak about Chicago’s candy history based on her
2012 book of the same name. For most of its history, Chicago produced
one-third of the nation’s candy. You probably know some of the manufac-
turers—Brach’s, Mars, Wrigley’s, Cracker Jack, Tootsie Rolls, Frango and
Dove. Take a candy quiz, learn some of the history behind these treat mak-
ers, explore what made Chicago such a powerful location, and why immi-
grants played a critical role in confectionery history. It’ll be delicious fun!
The Levy Senior Center provides outstanding programs and support for thousands of adults 55+
. The
services and programs offered help make it possible for seniors in the Evanston area to remain active,
independent, and connected to their community.

Vivian Maier: A Photographer’s Life and Afterlife with Pamela Bannos,
Professor of Photography in Northwestern University’s Department of Art
Theory and Practice
Pamela Bannos will discuss her critically acclaimed book, Vivian Maier: A
Photographer’s Life and Afterlife, which contrasts the life of Maier, a Chicago
street photographer, with the mythology that has been created around her.
The much-promulgated idea of Maier as a “nanny savant” has eclipsed her
true achievements, skills, and intentions. Bannos, an artist and researcher,
utilizes methods that highlight the forgotten and overlooked, and explores
the links between visual representation, urban space, history, and collective
memory. She has exhibited her work internationally.

Animal Communication: How to Effectively Say “No” to Your Animal
Companions with Carolee Biddle, professional animal communicator
How many times have you told your cat or dog “no” and yet the unwanted
behavior continues? From barking too much to stealing your favorite
pair of socks, animals can be confused about what we expect from them.
Carolee Biddle has communicated with many animals to learn what we
humans can do to modify their behavior and create more harmony in the
home. Biddle describes how she uses her innate intuition to energetically
connect to the animal, then “talk” with them using telepathy—the
universal language of pictures, words, feelings and knowings. You will
learn ways to sucessfully communicate your expections to your animals.
Hear about Carolee’s successes and what led her to this fulfilling career.

Mission Possible: Chicago’s Free South Africa Movement a film
presented by Ava Thompson Greenwell, film producer/director
This new documentary film traces the birth, growth, and maturation of the
anti-apartheid movement in Chicago from 1980-1994. Chicago activists
played a major role in putting pressure on the South African government
to end apartheid. Men and women worked together to organize education-
al forums, fundraisers, boycotts and demonstrations, and helped get legis-
lation passed that forced Illinois agencies to divest from companies doing
business with South Africa. Their work was so impactful that in1993,
Nelson Mandela came to Chicago to thank labor, academic, religious, and
community leaders for their help. Mission Possible documents the Chicago
connection that led to the release of Mandela, and ultimately, to the first
free elections for black South Africans. We will see a sneak preview of the
film and hear from Ava Thompson Greenwell about its origins.
