        Jan 7 & 8
        Start your new year off "green" with a unique, one of a kind calendar featuring some of most popular
        leaves at the Conservatory. Do a leaf rubbing or press some dried leaves to make your pictures.
       Herbal Tea Bags
        Jan 14 & 15
        Feeling the winter blues? Make your own herbal tea bags to take home; brew this homemade tea,
        sip it up, and feel better in no time! Participants will learn to identify both the herbs used in this
        activity, and their corresponding plant parts.

       Soil-less Planting
        Jan 21-22
        Learn about what a plant actually needs to live and grow by making a planting out of rocks and
        water to take home. After completing your activity, be sure to visit our Sugar from the Sun room and
        experience air, water, and sunlight.

       Fern Bookmarks
        Jan 28 & 29
        Learn about plants that lived during the time of the dinosaurs, then create a bookmark using one of
        these prehistoric plants, ferns.

        Open Mic: I have a Dream, Dr. King! Express your dreams for freedom and fairness through
        poetry and freedom songs. Recite excerpts of Dr. King’s famous speech. Then, write a letter to Dr.
        King expressing your dream for equal rights for all!

         Forever 27: Music Superstars Gone to an Early Grave
Jan 13 to Mar 7 (6:00 pm)

Inspired by the major exhibition Morbid Curiosity on display at the Cultural Center, Project Onward presents
a collection of paintings and drawings that commemorate the lives -- and deaths -- of performers who went
out in a blaze of glory at the age of 27. Beginning with blues legend Robert Johnson, the “27 Club” went on
to include Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, and, most recently, Amy Winehouse.

Dance Chance
Monday, Jan 16 (6:00 pm)
Ruth Page Theater; 1016 N. Dearborn, Chicago
Cost: $3.00
DanceWorks Chicago is excited to partner with The Ruth Page Center for the Arts on Dance Chance, a
one-hour event designed to offer opportunities for choreographers to show their work informally, create a
forum for dialogue among artists, and build audience for dance. Inspired by the concept of open-mic night,
Dance Chance is held once a month and features 3 choreographers chosen by chance, each of whom has
a 15-minute time slot to share their work. To round out the hour, the final 15-minute segment is a moderated
meet-the-artist session providing an opportunity for choreographers to discuss their work and process as
well as time for the audience to ask questions. At the end of each Dance Chance, the next trio of
participants is chosen from names submitted by choreographers in attendance. For more info:

Why not do some January cooking? For something to look forward to after the holidays, there will be FREE
cooking demos at River North’s ItaliAsia restaurant. Tucked high above the bend in the Chicago River, in
the building once known as the Apparel Mart, is a brand new restaurant aptly named Italiasia. Cannot
decide between Italian fare or Asian cuisine? Now you can have both! This is fusion that works – it is about
combining two types of fare as well as creating new dishes by merging flavors and this distinct menu has
something for everyone. The first free cooking demonstration on January 19 will focus on pasta with
Bolognese. In addition to learning about buying, cooking and storing pasta, attendees will sample food and

Don’t let winter slow you down. Come out and enjoy the sixth annual Polar Adventure Days.
Watch as amazing ice sculptures are created right in front of you, meet Siberian huskies, birds of prey and
other live animals, and listen to storytelling or live music. You can also make winter nature crafts, sip hot
cocoa, and snowshoe, if there is at least three inches of snow. Don’t forget to dress warm. These events
