A Note about Copyright In the video on the previous slide, Carol showed that it is technically possible to use the Google search feature within LucidChart. Important : If you and your students are creating projects that will be on the open Internet (not password-protected), you should not use the images found on Google, unless they specifically say that they are in Public Domain or have Creative Commons licenses . Fair Use does not apply on the open Internet because it is considered "Distribution." Your librarians would be happy to teach you more about Copyright and Fair Use. We can also assist your students in learning how to search for Creative Commons and public domain images.

Citing Images in LucidChart Information for an image citation does not appear with the image in LucidChart. It is challenging to determine where the images come from. From within LucidChart, it is not possible to request only Creative Commons or Public Domain images. Carol contacted LucidChart through the website to find out how to locate more information about the images. Within a few hours, a representative from LucidChart responded. His response is on the following slide (reprinted with permission from Mitch Dumke).

Citing Images used in LucidChart Hi Carol, Thank you for your email, I am excited for your students to use LucidChart! When citing Iconfinder, a general reference to the website Iconfinder.com should be sufficient and images from Google images from the search bar can easily be found by searching the normal Google images search bar and they will appear in the same order as they do in LucidChart. Fair Use Engine Carol and one of her colleagues are collaborating on a Moodle website about Copyright and Fair Use. They are using LucidChart to design a Fair Use Engine to help middle school teachers and students to determine whether a use of intellectual property is fair use.

Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. a.
