Connecting to the World The Promise of Web 2.0 in Education Presented by Kevin Hodgson Sixth Grade Teacher Southampton, Massachusetts Technology Liaison – Western Massachusetts Writing Project
Before we begin … How many of you blog? How many of you have used a wiki? How many of you have listened to a podcast? How many of you have created a podcast? How many of you have watched YouTube? How many of you have uploaded a video to YouTube? How many of you use social networking (Facebook, MySpace, etc.) How many of you are scared to death to try to use technology with students?
Did You Know … From: http:// youtube.com/watch?v =pMcfrLYDm2U
David Warlick says: “ We desperately need . . . we may not survive without . . . a generation of young people who are imaginative, inventive, fearless learners, and compassionate leaders. Yet, what can we say, as educators, about the students we are producing? We can prove that they can read, do basic math on paper, and they are able to sit for hours filling in bubble sheets. No generation in history has ever been so thoroughly prepared for the industrial age.” -- from http://davidwarlick.com/2cents/2006/02/16/happy-birthday-jude/
Fact The No Child Left Behind ( NCLB) Act of 2002 requires that by 12/31/06 all students reach technological proficiency by the end of the eighth grade , regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, family income, geographic location, or disability. Middle schools must report their eighth grade students’ technology proficiency.
A Personal Anecdote What is your technology autobiography? Mine begins with a classroom ….
Time Magazine says: “ (2006 was) … a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before. It's about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia and the million-channel people's network YouTube and the online metropolis MySpace. It's about the many wresting power from the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will not only change the world, but also change the way the world changes. “ – Lev Grossman, Time Magazine, December 13, 2006 From http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1569514,00.html Why were YOU were the Person of the Year for 2006?
What is Web 2.0? Web 2.0 is the term for Internet-based tools that allow anyone to add content to the web. People no longer need obscure programming skills. In the world of Web 2.0, the web is a two-way street. (Sometimes, the other term we use is the Read/Write Web) Weblogs Wikis Podcasting Video Social Networking
The Traditional Way Student uses Internet to gather information from sources Student writes a report Student hands in the report Student waits for the grade from teacher Repeat process
The New Way? (aka The Flat World) Student gathers information Student corresponds with others in the world Student works collaboratively on a problem, developing a solution
Weblogs A blog is a shortened version of weblog and represents a website that is easily created and updated and is often archived chronologically. A Weblog allows for others to comment and start a conversation.
Weblogs in Education Making Connections: A WMWP/NWP Technology Initiative From http://blogs.writingproject.org/blogWrite255/
Making Connections 200-plus students 15 teachers Five school districts Now entering our third year Objectives Connect students from different socio-economic backgrounds Introduce new technology into schools Provide authentic peer audience for publishing Investigate the use of Web 2.0 as a place for Writing Across the Curriculum (i.e, science)
Other Weblog Possibilities Daily homework site for families to access Publishing venue (to the world) Writing prompts “Fake” blog from other perspectives (history) Peer review and editing E-portfolios of student work and progress
Wikis A wiki is a essentially a website that can be quickly and collaboratively edited. The content of a wiki can be changed by its readers. A reader can add to, modify and correct a wiki. A proper wiki has many authors and is the result of the combined knowledge of many.
Wikis in Education Collaborative dictionary Link: http:// dogwritingideas.wikispaces.com/Crazy+Dictionary
Other Wiki Possibilities Planning a Conference Writing collaborative short stories Creating simple web site Presenting group research Interactive study guides for students Book reports with hyperlinks
Podcasting Podcasting is the distribution of content (which is often audio) using the elements of an RSS feed that sends files and updated automatically to readers, listeners, etc.
Podcasting in Education Youth Radio From http:// youthradio.wordpress.com /
Other Podcasting Possibilities Lectures or lesson plans Multi-lingual education (recording and listening) Daily/Weekly/Monthly radio news shows from the school Interviews with other students working on projects
Digital Storytelling Take a dash of a personal experience Add to it some writing Integrate audio and video Produce a small movie Then what? Produce a DVD, view it once or twice and then add it to the pile of DVDs in your collection
Digital Storytelling, Web 2.0 Collaborate on topics with others via the Internet Plan, Share, feedback, revision – using Weblogs, Wikis, etc. Use the new tools to edit smaller pieces into a whole (i.e, Jumpcut) Publish to the entire world (i.e, YouTube) Example: The Collaborative ABC Movie Project
The ABC Project The ABC Workshop: http://k12online.wm.edu/TheCollaborativeABCMovie_Project.htm
ABC, Continued The ABC Workshop: http://k12online.wm.edu/TheCollaborativeABCMovie_Project.htm
Social Networking "A social network service focuses on the building and verifying of online social networks for communities of people who share interests and activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others, and which necessitates the use of software. Most social network services are primarily web based and provide a collection of various ways for users to interact, such as chat, messaging, email, video, voice chat, file sharing, blogging, discussion groups, and so on." From Wikipedia -- http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_networking
Social Networking Explained: From http:// youtube.com/watch?v =6a_KF7TYKVc
Social Networking in Education From http:// teachersteachingteachers.org/?p =119
Other Social Networking Possibilities Everything we talked about earlier regarding Weblog, Wikis and podcasting, PLUS: Video Social bookmarking Tagging Chat other
Why You May Not Embrace Technology The fear that you’ll have to implement whatever you dream up. The fear that you will fail. The fear that you will do something stupid and be ridiculed by your peers for decades. The fear that you’ll get fired. The fear that there will be an unanticipated backlash associated with your idea. The fear of change. From -- http:// sethgodin.typepad.com /
And … Student privacy issues!!!! Words to the Wise: Never use student last names Get parents on board Get administrators on board Get friendly with your technology person Spend time explaining and discussing safe use issues with your students Illustration from http://www.faceupstudio.com/blahg/archives/2006/08/uhoh.html
Why You Should Embrace Technology Global Awareness Learning from and working collaboratively with individuals representing diverse cultures, religions and lifestyles in a spirit of mutual respect and open dialogue in personal, work and community contexts Understanding other nations and cultures, including the use of non-English languages Creativity and Innovation Demonstrating originality and inventiveness in work Developing, implementing and communicating new ideas to others Acting on creative ideas to make a tangible and useful contribution to the domain in which the innovation occurs Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Exercising sound reasoning in understanding Framing, analyzing and synthesizing information in order to solve problems and answer questions
More Reasons to Consider Technology Communication and Collaboration Articulating thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively through speaking and writing Demonstrating ability to work effectively with diverse teams Exercising flexibility and willingness to be helpful in making necessary compromises to accomplish a common goal Information Literacy Accessing information efficiently and effectively, evaluating information critically and competently and using information accurately and creatively for the issue or problem at hand Possessing a fundamental understanding of the ethical/legal issues surrounding the access and use of information Adapted from Partnership for 21st Century Skills http://www.21stcenturyskills.org/index.php?option= com_content&task = view&id =254&Itemid=120
Another gentle push forward …. “ Students are creating online content, collaborating with other students around the world and showcasing their work to a global audience. The knowledge our students will gain from engaging with Web 2.0 technologies will foster the communication and information literacy skills that are required in the 21st century.“ From http://web2tutorial.wikispaces.com/
And a Poem to Share Z is for Zeitgeist . So often we live only in the moment and fail to see the realm of possibilities until they have shuttled on past us and we are left with the trailing shadows of what might have been or could have been or at least, seemed likely at some juncture before the hesitation. Yet, perhaps, if we were to reach out to explore this terrain together then our imagination might emerge as community, a hive of interaction and learning. Perhaps something new might unfold from this moment when our fingers wrap around the features of these times in such as way that we are guided forward instead of retreating back into the comfortable tradition of how things have always been, forever and ever. This compositional entry into the unknown is a strange pathway that moves between the heart and the mind and the eye, image under sound, stories told from some center inside of us and then shared as a common experience on the vast digital page. Your story becomes mine, and mine yours, and the sequence of how it is told is how we traverses amidst the phonetic sounds of our shared tongue, from the comfort of A to Z, and everything in between, to the micro-films of narrative. There exists a space for our stories here in this place where space does not exist, and like little wooden blocks with symbols carved upon them, we are balanced upon each other and dependent upon the whole. The moment is now and the movement is us. Z is for Zeitgeist .
So, what’s next? Some advice. Work with the tools yourself before you bring them into the classroom (Classroom 2.0 -- http://classroom20.ning.com/ -- is a good place to start) Plan out your goals and expectations – be reasonable with what you can accomplish Take it slow Be brave!
