LYNDA TUTORIAL:
LEAN SIX SIGMA
FOUNDATIONS
By: Garrett Gordon
PART 1: INTRODUCING LEAN SIX SIGMA
• Why Six Sigma?
• To provide reliable, consistent, dependable products to your
customers.
PART 1: INTRODUCING LEAN SIX SIGMA
(CONT.)
• Why Lean?
• The permanently eliminate all non-value-added activities
(unnecessary steps or activities, rework, waiting time,
unnecessary movement of people or material, and excess
inventory.
PART 1: INTRODUCING LEAN SIX SIGMA
(CONT.)
• Why Lean Six Sigma?
• The reasoning of applying both Lean Principles (visible)
and Six Sigma Methodology (non-visible) at the same
time, is to get better results.
PART 2: UNDERSTANDING SIX SIGMA
• Define Stage
• The define stage of Six Sigma is to start with process mapping,
outline what is expected to be accomplished, show financial
measurements, outline the specific problem to be solved, and
remember the customer.
PART 2: UNDERSTANDING SIX SIGMA
(CONT.)
• Measure Stage
• “If you can’t measure something, you can’t understand it.” By Dr.
H. James Harrington.
PART 2: UNDERSTANDING SIX SIGMA
(CONT.)
• Analyzing Stage
• While analyzing the process map, you want to look specifically for
time traps or activities that are slowing down the total process
time.
PART 2: UNDERSTANDING SIX SIGMA
(CONT.)
• Improving Stage
• Improving your work time and time again is the heart of any Six
Sigma project.
PART 2: UNDERSTANDING SIX SIGMA
(CONT.)
• Control Stage
• Being able to control enables you to have a continuous
improvement organization and make the improvement permanent,
which makes the “Control” stage the most important stage in the
DMAIC methodology.
PART 2: UNDERSTANDING SIX SIGMA
(CONT.)
• Design for Six Sigma
• The decide of Six Sigma uses the methodology of: Define, Measure,
Analyze, Design, and Verify; where you will focus those attributes
that are critical to quality in the eyes of your customer.
PART 3: UNDERSTANDING LEAN
• Lean Metrics
• The basic premise of Lean is to eliminate anything that does not
provide value.
PART 3: UNDERSTANDING LEAN (CONT.)
• 5 Ss
• The 5 Ss are to sort each item in a workplace to its proper place;
set in order the materials and tools so that they are easy to find;
shine or keep the workplace clean; standardize formal procedures
to ensure all steps are performed correctly and consistently; and
sustain the standardized process through effective training and
communication practices.
PART 3: UNDERSTANDING LEAN (CONT.)
• Just In Time
• Just in Time means that raw materials, components, and
subassemblies are delivered to the factory just when they are
needed for production, which allows inventory to be maintained at
minimal levels, thus reducing cost and increasing flexibility within
the system.
PART 3: UNDERSTANDING LEAN (CONT.)
• Total Productive Maintenance
• Total Productive Maintenance or TPM practices ensure that
machines will not break down unexpectedly and that scheduled
maintenance will be completed in a timely manner.
PART 3: UNDERSTANDING LEAN (CONT.)
• Quality at the Source
• Quality at the Source is doing the process right the first
time, which will eliminate the inspection step in a
process and help you streamline the process.
PART 3: UNDERSTANDING LEAN (CONT.)
• Continuous Improvement
• You must continue to improve your product or service because you
cannot stand still because your competitors are continuously
getting better and passing you by.
PART 4: IMPLEMENTING LEAN SIX SIGMA
• Leading the Project
• To be successful in leading a Lean Six Sigma project, there are
three things you need from your company: leadership from the top,
skilled team members, and a strong supporting infrastructure.
PART 4: IMPLEMENTING LEAN SIX SIGMA
(CONT.)
• Controlling the Project
• During the project, you are controlling who does what and
communicating with them to make sure they are doing the right
things and also making sure that each member knows in which
direction the entire team is moving.
PART 4: IMPLEMENTING LEAN SIX SIGMA
(CONT.)
• Applying Lean Six Sigma to Services
• Lean Six Sigma can help you reduce complexity within your service
processes.
PART 4: IMPLEMENTING LEAN SIX SIGMA
(CONT.)
• Lean Six Sigma for Supply Chain Management
• Today’s applications for Lean Six Sigma have gone far
beyond the factory walls, spanning functional boundaries
across the company and extending throughout the entire
supply chain.
