Price range
• The price range of Inside soap is currently £1.55-£1.75, on average
around £1.65. Stereotypically Soap operas are associated with
working class people who may view Soap Operas as a source of
diversion from their ordinary lives The price is expensive compared
to other soap opera magazines however to produce a 100 page
magazine a lot of money is required so the price is justified.
Social- economic needs
• Generally, the Soap Opera magazine genre might appeal to Care givers in regards to Maslow Hierarchy of needs. The
denotation of “You killed my dad” are effective in making people feel pity towards the characters presented on the magazine
front cover, which may entice people into buying the magazine. However, some people may want routine in the magazine they pur
Masthead ideas and connotations
colours
YELLOW- The colour yellow is particularly bold and prominent on the page of a soap opera
magazine, especially when complimented with other darker colours. Yellow is mostly used to
highlight words mid sentences to add further empathises on them implying to the reader that this
is a significant bit of information. Bright colours are specifically used to add excitement on the
page again enticing and engaging the reader.
RED- The colour red mainly has negative connotations of danger, death and love which is usually
highly representative of the soap opera genre. The colour is bold and stands out on the page
drawing readers to the magazine. It is often used for the masthead to introduce the soaps main
narrative .
BLUE- By using all three primary colours within the soap opera magazine, each
colour would stand out individually and compliment each other on the page. Blue
again is very bright and so would stand out on the front page making the soaps
appear and seem more exciting concluding to the idea that the soaps add fun to
peoples lives.
FONT STYLE AND PRONOUNCIATION
PUNCTUATION- Soap opera magazines uses excessive punctuation in an attempt to appeal to the
working class. Most commonly used are exclamation marks, which follow the end of a sentence to further
highlight the content of the sentence and put emphasis on it. Exclamatory help the working class reader
understand the excited expression without having to use complex words. This type of excessive
punctuation would not be appropriate in a upper class magazine as it would not appear very formal.
positioning on the page
MASTHEAD- The masthead is generally positioned either in the
top left hand corner of the page or spread along the top of the
page as a strip. This is where the readers attention would be
most drawn to due to the idea as it is the biggest text on the page
so the reader would expectedly navigate towards this first. It is
also most common for British readers to read from left to right in
which by having the masthead placed here, most people would
expectedly look here first.
HEADLINE- Most headline feature on magazines as the
second largest text on the page, centred towards the lower
centre of the page as this is where most likely the readers will
look to next. Most magazines use harsher colours such as
red and orange to draw the readers attention towards the
headline, especially as the headline is usually a shocking
revelation to the soap.
IMAGES-The main image on the magazine is featured in the
centre of the page with the main headline underneath. This
is due to the idea so that the reader can navigate into what
soap the headline is about. Images are also scattered
around the page appearing most likely bolder than most of
the text as readers of the working class are more likely to be
drawn images that are about the soap than long pieces of
text.
HEADLINES
IMAGES NEEDED AND PRICE
Image- The main images featured in a soap opera magazine is
most usually a medium close up shot of a character that has
been superimposed against a white or colourful background.
The images covers most of the page so it is important that the
image is clear and has a suitable resolution. In most soap opera
magazines, more than one characters features as the main
image, stitched together to make for one bigger image.I will use
this idea for amy soap opera magazine by having multiple
characters from my soap opera standing next to each other in
the middle of the page so they are the central focus. I will need
to make sure the lighting conditions are all similar so the
pictures fir together. I will make sure my characters stare
directly at the camera to give the reader a sense of involvement
in the content of the magazine. I will most likely take close up
shots of the characters so that they audience not only feel a
close engagement, but also that the reader can really analyse
the characters.
Price- For my magazine, I will personally want the quality of my magazine to
be similar to that of inside soap, in which means I could justify paying prices of
£1.50 per magazine. This would be an acceptable price as it is still affordable
for a working class community and would also represent my brand as one of
the premium magazine.
LANGUAGE/PUFF PROMOTION
After examine and researching a lot of other competing Soap Operas I have noticed
that the language utilised is rather informal and more conversational than most
expensive magazines. This could be due to the stereotypes surrounding working
class people who generally are seemed to be more socially informal plus
conversational than most upper class people. In my magazine, as my target
audience is the working class, I would replicate this by using shot declarative
sentences with over exaggerated punctuation such as exclamation marks to appeal
to the working class. I have also recognised that most magazines offer other
incentives such as potential chances to win a prize, this persuades working class
people who may not be able to afford these luxuries. Language used such as “free”
and “new” are particularly effective in attracting a working class audience as it
portrays the content as exclude to that particular magazine.
SYNERGY (SOCIAL MEDIA)
In todays society, social media plays a very important role in all
peoples lives. From analysis, not many Social media magazines
uses social media synergy regularly on their front cover, despite a
working class having social media platforms. However as a
modern magazine appealing to a young audience, I think it is very
much essential for my magazine to include social media and
website links so the younger generation can be updated over
social media accounts. The use of social media would not only
promote the soap further, but allow people with a similar interest to
talk about the soaps. In addition to this, I would also like to
promote an online edition of the magazine so that a younger
audience would have another means of reading the magazine.
conclusion
In conclusion, for the next stages of my production of my
magazine I should purchase a paper copy of the Insidesoap so I
can use it as a guide when forming my own hand drafts. From
this, I can then create a suitable magazine that is similar to the
quality of the magazines I have researched. This will justify the
price of my magazine. My next task would then be to organise the
props that would be necessary for the front cover of the magazine
and the outfits my characters will be wearing that all fit with the
context of my soap.
In regards to the software used to create the product, I will use
Photoshop on a Mac computer as this is the software I used for
my AS foundation portfolio. I wish to develop and further my skills
in this software.
