Main characters shown in Insidious opening sequence This is the only scene in the opening sequence that shows the protagonist, the audience is only given a glimpse of the main character to keep the rest of the film a mystery and leaving the viewers unsure of who the main character is. Dim lighting is used to maintain the mystery and not give much away. What they have given away is that the character is a young girl in her bedroom, as she is young and mainly hidden under the covers it gives the impression that she is vulnerable and likely to be the protagonist. From the setting of the bedroom it shows that she lives in a normal household, which makes the film more relatable from the viewers perspective. The only other scene that shows a main character is this shot showing a glimpse of the antagonist that will later appear in the film. This short scene is quite shocking the viewer as there wasn’t much build up to the antagonist potentially appearing, this puts the viewer on edge as they now have an idea of things to
- 2. come. They now also a have a face to match to the antagonist and will be unsure later on in the film when he/she may appear. The feeling of suspense that the viewer feels will be associated with the image of the antagonist that is causing that suspense. The character has only become visible in the candle light, perhaps suggesting that they hide in the dark. Once again not much has been given away on what the rest of the antagonist looks like other than the face, this leave the audiences imagination to create their own version of what their whole figure looks like until they are fully revealed. Judging from facial expression it is clear that the antagonist has an aggressive and supernatural personality.
