Yellow rust of wheat is an important disease in India that spreads rapidly in North Indian states from November to mid-March due to favorable temperature and moisture conditions. Over the past four decades, proactive surveillance and timely advisories have successfully managed yellow rust in India. Spots near foothills in Punjab where yellow rust initially appears are regularly monitored. Wheat varieties in trials are evaluated for resistance under artificial inoculation. Genotypes showing consistent resistance over four seasons are shared with breeders. During 2016-17, yellow rust was effectively managed and occurred later in some states. New pathotypes identified were used to evaluate wheat varieties. The deployment of resistant varieties has saved an estimated 2.678 million tons of wheat yield.
