Wrapping up

Bart Vangrimde

the collective centre of the Belgian technological industry
Subject 1: Surface preparation and coating

• Challenge: tedious surface preparation of fragile composite

• Low pressure plasma looks promising to avoid manual surface
preparation of camera cases for space applications
    • “we got enough information to go further”

                                          © Sirris | www.sirris.be | info@sirris.be | 26/06/2011 6
Subject 2: Powder coating composites?

• Solutions for powder coating are in reach, problem is the
    conductivity of CFRP.
• How to increase the conductivity?
    • inclusion of nano-particles?
    • nano-particles commercially available for integration in resins?
• Temperature of powder coating 150-200’C
    • should not be an issue
• Outgassing when changing coating to be checked…

                                          © Sirris | www.sirris.be | info@sirris.be | 26/06/2011 7
Subject 3: Composites in sun shields

• What are the benefits of composite design in sun shields?
    • structural advantages in terms of strength/stiffness
    • function integration (transparency, integrated lights)
    • click-in instead of bolting/screwing

                      Alu GFRP GFRP CFRP CFRP

Subject 4: Steel as composite reinforcement

• Bekaert suggests using steel fibers for reinforced plastics.
• Possibilities to explore:
    • electrical conductivity and electromagnetic properties
    • recycling
    • processing
    • impact resistance

             carbon

                      steel fibers are much tougher
              steel than carbon fiber

    • examples for “high weight applications” are small wind turbine
        blades or golf shafts
                                                      © Sirris | www.sirris.be | info@sirris.be | 26/06/2011 9
Open challenges

• Life cycle analysis (LCA) of composite structures
• Opportunities for MICA
• Production of (metal matrix) composite materials on large
    scale, in continuous processes

Lessons learned blind box
                                                                          with too little rigidity

                                                                    window frame

• Challenging challenges challenged us!
• No no-gos for composites window
• Ways to explore identified

Heidi Van den Rul

the collective centre of the Belgian technological industry
Major challenges

• Does this technology works in my application/products?
    More knowledge about functions
    • Halochromic effect
    • Tactile properties
    • Dilatation depending on temperature
    • Smart functions for traceabilty of food: packaging RFID
• Integration in the process of the smart coating
    • application: vacuum – wet cost
    • E.g. problem with Antifingerprint coating processing
    • More than the function itself: stability, chemical resistance,
processability, how to test e.g. antibacterial
• Supporting innovation
    • How to help SME’s to start with nanotech
    • Governmental financial instruments are available

                                                © Sirris | www.sirris.be | info@sirris.be | 26/06/2011 13
Fast evolving markets

• Antibacterial coatings are hot!
    • Applicabilty still under questions

• RFID tags

• Color based smart materials
    • Thermochromic
    • Photochromic
    • Halochromic
    • mechanochromic

    is already huge!
    • Food packaging

• More insights/in depth knowledge required for applications
    of new & advanced materials
    • Smart
    • Multifunctional

• Processing

Sustainable Materials
Wrapping up

Stefan Milis

the collective centre of the Belgian technological industry
Lesson 1:
Success factors needed!
Some success factors for the valorisation of more sustainable
  materials solutions

• A win-win is created
    • More functionality
    • Lower or equal cost
    • More energy efficiency on the life-time
    • …
• Clear incentives to innovate towards cleantech
    • Identify market opportunity over the value chains
    • The hunting for hunting grounds is a very difficult challenge

                                          © Sirris | www.sirris.be | info@sirris.be | 26/06/2011 17
Lesson 2:
Look beyond your Business Model
• From selling products to selling functions
• Driver for more sustainable products over the lifetime
    • Energy, material, repair, reuse, recycling, ….
    • Ecodesign!
• Different concepts exist
    • Leasing
    • Take back
• No one size fits all solution depending on:
    • B2B, B2C
    • Product Lifetime
    • Material

                                           © Sirris | www.sirris.be | info@sirris.be | 26/06/2011 18
Lesson 3:
    Sustainable material selection, a puzzle?
• Some tools on sustainability (planet) exist
     • Ecolizer
     • Solidworks add-in
     • LCA
     • …
• Facilitates evaluation of alternatives, gives no new solutions
• No integrated solution towards product and process

• Real challenge is to close the gap between identification of
sustainable alternatives and the final application at an
     acceptable cost

Top 3 lessons learned • Offering of (theoretically) interesting functionality/properties is already huge! • Food packaging • More insights/in depth knowledge required for applications of new & advanced materials • Smart • Multifunctional • Processing © Sirris | www.sirris.be | info@sirris.be | 26/06/2011 15
  • 16. Sustainable Materials Wrapping up Stefan Milis the collective centre of the Belgian technological industry
  • 17. Lesson 1: Success factors needed! Some success factors for the valorisation of more sustainable materials solutions • A win-win is created • More functionality • Lower or equal cost • More energy efficiency on the life-time • … • Clear incentives to innovate towards cleantech • Identify market opportunity over the value chains • The hunting for hunting grounds is a very difficult challenge © Sirris | www.sirris.be | info@sirris.be | 26/06/2011 17
  • 18. Lesson 2: Look beyond your Business Model • From selling products to selling functions • Driver for more sustainable products over the lifetime • Energy, material, repair, reuse, recycling, …. • Ecodesign! • Different concepts exist • Leasing • Take back • No one size fits all solution depending on: • B2B, B2C • Product Lifetime • Material © Sirris | www.sirris.be | info@sirris.be | 26/06/2011 18
  • 19. Lesson 3: Sustainable material selection, a puzzle? • Some tools on sustainability (planet) exist • Ecolizer • Solidworks add-in • LCA • … • Facilitates evaluation of alternatives, gives no new solutions • No integrated solution towards product and process • Real challenge is to close the gap between identification of sustainable alternatives and the final application at an acceptable cost © Sirris | www.sirris.be | info@sirris.be | 26/06/2011 19
