REVIEW:
Tossing Dice
Materials: two dice with the following faces.
1.2 ,3.5 ,2.6 , 4.1 ,1.3 ,3.3
Mechanics:
a. Distribute 2 cubes to each group.
b. One pupil rolls the cube and the other records the face up digit.
c. The group who gives the most number of correct answers wins the
game.
MOTIVATION:
Which are decimals?
Which are whole numbers?
15 891
What’s the difference between a whole number and
a decimal number? Can we multiply the two
numbers?
Presentation:
Rudolf lives 2.4 km from school. How far does he
ride in going to and from the school?
Group the pupils and have them perform the task.
a. How far is Rudolf’s house from the school?
b. What is being asked in the problem?
Performing the Activity:
To find the answer we multiply 2.4 by 2.
Solution:
a. Multiply just like whole numbers.
2.4
x 2
Steps
2 x 4 = 8
8
b. Count the decimal places in the
factors.
2 x 2 = 4
4
c. The number of decimal places in
the product is equal to the sum of
the decimal places in the factors.
Processing the Activities:
After the activity, see to it that the teacher immediately sets
remedial for those who got the wrong answers.
Did you learn something from the activity?
How did you get the answer?
Did you follow the steps?
Reinforcing the Concept and Skills:
Explore and Discovery:
Look at this square.
What is its perimeter
How can you find the perimeter?
How many sides has a square?
3.5 cm
What can you say about its side?
Because there are 4 equal sides and each measures 3.5 cm, we can
compute this as 4 x 3.5 = N. Here’s how this is done.
3.5 cm
3.5
x 4
Steps a. Multiply just like whole numbers.
4 x 5 = 2 0
0
2
4 x 3 = 12 + 2 = 14
14
b. Count the decimal places in the
factors.
c. Place the decimal point in the product. The
decimal place in the product is equal to the total
number of decimal places in the factors.
one decimal place
Get Moving:
Multiply. Choose your answer from the choices given inside the
parenthesis.
1.) 4 x 7.28 = ( a. 29.19 b. 291.2 c. 2.912 )
2.) 7 x 3.14 = ( a. 20.98 b. 21.98 c. 22.98 )
3.) 3 x 6.25 = ( a. 18.25 b. 18.5 c. 18.75 )
4.) 2 x 12.25 = ( a. 25.1 b. 25.12 c. 25.13 )
5.) 6 x 5.75 ( a. 34.5 b. 3.45 c. 0.345 )
Summarizing the Lesson:
Lead the pupils to generalize that:
To multiply decimals by whole numbers,
multiply like whole numbers then count the number
of decimal places in the factors. The sum of the
number of decimal places in the factor is equal to
the number of decimal places in the product.
Applying to New and Other Situations:
a. Complete the table by giving each product.
X 2.6 11.92
4 _____ _____
12 _____ _____
b. Andrei bought apples at P15.50 each. How much did he
pay for 5 apples?
Apply Your Skills!
Solve the following problem.
1.) If a notebook is ₱ 5.25, how much is the cost of 6
notebooks?
2.) A working student earns ₱ 25.50 an hour. How much
does he earn in 4 hours? If he works 3 days a week, how
much does she earn a week?
3.) Mrs. De Guzman’s class rode is 3.8 mile to the
observatory. The next closest observatory is 13 times as far.
How many miles is the second observatory?
Assessment:
Copy and give the product.
Give the missing numbers.
1.) 0.76 2.) 0.12 3.) 16.57
X 4 X 5 X 6
1. If 367 x 28 = 10276, what is 36.7 x 28 equal to?
2. If 163 x 7 = 1141, what is 1.63 x 7 equal to?
Home Activity:
Write the product with the decimal point in the correct
place. Then be ready to read your answer.
Enrichment:
Marina's car gets 44.8 miles per gallon on the
highway. If her fuel tank holds 15.4 gallons, then
how far can she travel on one full tank of gas?
1.) 6.48 2.) 20.6 3.) 3.65 4.) 2. 34 5.) 12.23
X 32 X 18 X 23 X 12 X 13
