- 1. Let your children enjoy the holiday with some mathematics! If you feel your child needs to review or enforce their understanding or skills in certain mathematical topics, the website www.MyMaths.co.uk is a great tool for this. Luanda International School has a school subscription, which allows students to access all lessons and tasks from anywhere. They don’t need to carry anything home; the only thing they need is the school login (please verify with your child before you leave on holiday that they know this login!). Review of this year’s mathematics work For any of the units done this year in mathematics class, there are review lessons and homework tasks on MyMaths. These can be found on the main page in the “Library”, organized in branches. Your child can also choose to select “Booster Packs” and work through a pre-‐selected list of topics. This is what can be used as a guideline – the year levels reflect the current year. • Year 7 students could work on Four Boosters • Year 8 and 9 students could work on Six Boosters or Ds to Cs • Year 10 students could work on Ds to Cs or Cs to Bs • Year 11 students could work on Cs to Bs or A to Astar. Basic skills The secondary mathematics team has invited some students in each year group to work on a “holiday pack” during their holiday. The holiday packs, one for each year level, contain a review of several foundational skills taught during the year. If you have not received an email with an invitation for your child to work through the holiday pack, but you do wish to sign up your child, you could send a request to Mrs Annette Gubbels (agubbels@lisluanda.com) for your child to be signed up for the appropriate year level holiday booster pack. Please remember: This is targeted towards students who need to work on their basic skills and not for those looking for extension activities. In case you are in need of a tutor who can help your child in their revision during the holiday, please contact Mr. Ali Shebani, our counselor, who has contact details of an excellent online mathematics tutor. (ashebani@lisluanda.com) Calculators Earlier this week an email message was sent out to all parents of upcoming Year 9 to 13 students, saying that their child needs to have a graphic display calculator (GDC). Recommended types are: • TI84 Plus • TI84 Plus SilverEdition If your child will be in Year 7 or 8, we do advise for the students to have a (simple, scientific) calculator. We do not use calculators much in the first two years of MYP, but occasionally it will be used as a teaching tool. If your child does not have a calculator yet, you could consider buying the more advanced calculator already. This is not required, but definitely worth considering, as your child will be in Year 9 before you know it The Maths Team
