Recently, in order to promote it’s new website building product 
called “GoCentral”, GoDaddy partnered with The Onion’s in- 
house ad agency Onion Labs, to produce an ad campaign 
starring “X”. The video depicts X as a bearded, tattooed man. X 
goes on a talk show to promote his (fake) memoir “My Life As X”.
The trailer of this video says - “You won’t see an interview with an 
abstract concept personified for marketing purposes like this 
anywhere else!”

Universal Tube & Roll-form Equipment Corporation is an 
American manufacturer and supplier of metal machine 
tubes and pipes, founded in 1985. The company 
specializes in buying and selling tube mills, pipe mills 
and roll-forming machines.
In 2006, this company led a law-suit against the website,
X. Their original domain name sounded very similar to
that of X. This resulted in them receiving 68 million hits in 
August 2006 and their servers crashed. The lawsuit was 
later settled by the parties.

studied music composition at Duke University and learned to 
program websites by creating one for his music band. After 
graduating in 2003, he set up his own Web development firm. 
In 2005, he joined X as a web designer.
At X, Soleio Cuervo spearheaded an effort to unify the ways in 
which people left comments on the website. As part of the 
overhaul, he wanted to introduce an idea that had been cooked 
up at one of X's "hackathon" coding sessions (all-night events 
where employees gathered to work on projects that they 
haven't had the time to do on their regular jobs).

On April 2, 2011, the GIF animation of X was posted by 25-year-old 
Christopher Torres of Dallas, Texas, who uses the name 
"prguitarman", on his website LOL-Comics.
Torres explained in an interview where the idea for the animation
came from: "I was doing a donation drive for the Red Cross and in- 
between drawings in my Livestream video chat, two different people 
mentioned I should draw a 'Pop Tart' and a 'cat'."
In response, he created a hybrid image of a Pop-Tart and a cat, 
which was developed a few days later into the animated GIF.
The design of X was influenced by Torres' pet cat Marty, who died in 
November 2012 from feline infectious peritonitis.

32-year old who works as an Administrator at a preschool 
called the Little Blossoms Academy in the U.S. state of Ohio.
In 2016, due to one of Michelle Gregg's actions, Little
Blossom Academy was overwhelmed with angry Facebook 
messages and posts on it’s Facebook page.
Many people called up the preschool and demanded that
Michelle Gregg be removed from her position. A large group 
of people even protested outside the preschool.
Why were so many people angry with Michelle Gregg?

Wojak was a regular user of the Polish imageboard site “Vichan”. 
There he discovered an image of a face with the filename 
“twarz.jpg”.
This image was subsequently popularized as a reaction image
after Wojak submitted it to the German language imageboard site 
“Krautchan” in May 2010. Soon after, the picture became known as 
“Wojak’s face” and “ciepła twarz” (“warm face”). The image spread 
to other international image board sites, including the Italian 
“Pastachan” and the Russian “Dobrochan”.
This image was later popularised by 4chan and it eventually 
became a famous meme.

apartment complex, leaving one person hospitalized for smoke 
inhalation.
The local station KFOR News Channel 4 was among the first to arrive

Kimberly Wilkins.
During the interview, Kimberly Wilkins stated that she had woken up 
to get a “cold pop” when she thought someone was grilling before

the more memorable lines of the interview.

16-year-old high school student from North Carolina, USA.
In an interview which was published in an online magazine, 
Zoe Roth stated that she is not a pyromaniac, and a few 
weeks ago, she and a friend spent two hours trying to light 
a campfire in Lake Tahoe, where Zoe was working a 
summer restaurant job. She said - “Everything was wet, and 
it was so frustrating. I was, like, C'mon, this is my meme!”

In April 2017, Zara launched a range of denim miniskirts as a 
part of the limited “Oil-on-Denim” collection, which was created 
through collaborations with artists and was only available in 
selected markets. The designer of the skirt is Mario de Santiago.

caused a controversy on the social media. Many people said 
that by incorporating a hate symbol of the alt-right in it’s 
miniskirt’s design, Zara was promoting anti-Semitic and white 
supremacist values.

of the Internet.
He was the Editor of the “Request for Comment” document 
series and administered the Internet Assigned Numbers 
Authority until his death in 1998. He gave the world Postel’s 
Law (including the robustness principle) and was a major 
influence for Vint Cerf and Tim Berners-Lee.
In 2012, Jonathan Postel was inducted into the Internet Hall of 
Fame by the Internet Society.

incidents on 4chan. The /r9k/ community is most well-known for
its greentext stories that analyse social norms and celebrate
singledom.
In 2008, /r9k/ was ﬁrst introduced by Christopher Poole as an
experimental forum powered by Robot9000, a special Perl script
programmed by an ex-NASA scientist, X, that would ﬁlter reposts
from showing up. The purpose of the experiment was to see if a
board could develop its own subculture if memes and copypasta
were heavily discouraged.
X had developed the Robot9000 script to moderate one of his Y-
related IRC channels.

In June 2017, Washington Square FC, a soccer team in
Massachusetts came up with a unique way to decrease the cost of
playing. They roped in X as the sponsor for the club.
John Clippert, the captain of the club said - “He and I (former player
Jaime Skelton) were slightly intoxicated one night with a few other
players and we were joking about getting sponsored by a ______
Company. We thought it would be funny. But also, I thought of it as
one of those jokes where it’s funny but would never happen. But
Jaime has a great talent for writing. So, he crafted a letter, then he
and I did some edits, took a screen shot and sent it to X’s Twitter.”
Luckily, X responded positively to this letter and the club and X
worked out a sponsorship deal in which the company name is
featured prominently on team jerseys.

“Les Horribles Cernettes" (French for "The Horrible CERN Girls")
was an all-female band, self-labelled as "the one and only High
Energy Rock Band", founded by employees of CERN. Their musical 
genre is often described as “doo-wop”. The initials of their name, 
LHC, are the same as those of the Large Hadron Collider which was 
later built at CERN.
The band was founded in 1990 by Michele de Gennaro, a graphic 
designer at CERN. Silvano de Gennaro, an analyst in the Computer 
Science department at CERN, wrote songs for this band.

B.A. in English Literature. He currently works as a school teacher 
in Boston.
In a Reddit AMA, Griffin Kiritsy wrote that - “It was an interview for 
Reader's Digest I did in 2007 as a X. The topic was people that 
are in touch with technology, and since I played Halo and had a 
laptop and a Sidekick, I was allegedly in touch with technology. 
The caption under the photo was something like "X Griffin Kiritsy" 
and it went on Reader's Digest online, and subsequently entered 
into the web forever and became a meme.”

teams and fall-outs, he was left with an unsponsored car at the 
Food City 500.
A crowdfunded campaign saw $55,000 being raised as Wise ran 
the “Moonrocket” (his car) at the Aaron’s 499, achieving his 
second-best finish at the time. He then won the vote to appear in 
the 2014 All-Star Race due to international support and an 
excited fanbase, running the “Moonrocket” in the race.
Later, John Wise released the official crew t-shirts for sale to fund 
his participation in the Geico 500 and sold over 5000 t-shirts.

deleted this photo and apologised.
They also released an official statement which stated -

to the so-called X was raised with us, we immediately removed it.”

Henderson, a 12-year old boy who committed suicide by
shooting himself on April 20, 2006 because someone stole his 
iPod.
After his death, one of Mitchell’s friend wrote a poem as a tribute 
to him and posted it on MySpace. This poem kept referring to 
Mitchell as “X”. This repeated misspelling resulted in the internet 
laughing and eventually trolls on 4chan made the term X 
popular for “shock value” to mock Mitchell and shock mourners.
X became a meme and in the online world it is now used to refer 
to someone who has committed suicide.

Giorgio Tsoukalos is a Swiss-born Greek-Austrian writer and television 
personality. He is a proponent of the idea that X interacted with ancient 
humans. He is the Chairman and co-founder of Legendary 
Times magazine, which features articles on the topic of X and related

He featured on a documentary series titled X, a documentary series
that explored the possibility that X may have visited in the past. The
documentary focuses on the “X Theory” which states that X came to
earth throughout the ancient times and helped shape history. For

required to do numerous tasks in a research facility guided by a
computer named GlaDOS, who repeatedly mentions that following the

As the game progresses, the player finds messages written on the walls 
as warnings from an old lab worker. One message scrawled on the

Nimble America is a non-proﬁt organization which was
dedicated to promoting Donald Trump. During the US
elections, Nimble America's focus had been on spreading
viral memes and fake news to defame Hillary Clinton. Nimble
America, claims that the community has “proven that
shitposting is powerful and meme magic is real.”
In September 2016, X, the CEO of Y, posted on Reddit under
the username “NimbleRichMan”, supporting Donald Trump
(image on next slide). X also donated $10,000 to Nimble
America. X’s actions became quite controversial after his real
identity was revealed, and he eventually had to resign as the
CEO of Y in the coming months.
