This document discusses how the internet can shape collective memory formation around traumatic events. It uses the 2009 earthquake in Abruzzi, Italy as a case study. The author conducted qualitative analysis of Facebook groups and posts about the earthquake. The results showed that the internet served as a space for victims, witnesses, and outside observers to share stories, photos and discuss their experiences. However, the fragmented digital narratives on the internet risk being ephemeral and becoming forgotten over time.
