Why Publish your findings?
“Unpublished work is as if not being done at all”
“Publish or Perish!” (obligation!)
 Opportunity to expand or share knowledge/ideas in a chosen field
 Ensure recognition of “ownership” of a particular idea or theoretical advance
 Career-enhancing (Publish or perish!)
 Secure funding opportunities
 Personal gratification
 Acquire valuable practice in working with the written word

 Homology model building of Pheasant’s hemoglobin
 INTRODUCTION: Hemoglobin (Hb)’s structural and functional correlation is extensively studied,
especially in nonhuman animals, that has provided the basic knowledge to this field [1, 2].
 Materials and methods: The model was created using Modeller [3].
 Results and discussion: The predicted model consisted of seven beta sheets just like the template
three D structure [4].

Oh other are problems!
 The style of references is not according to the journal
or the university recommended style.
 You have to rewrite the references in another style.
 You also need to change the in text citation style
For example from [1] to (Author, year)
Don’t worry!
 Computer programmers have developed programs that
can do all that stuff with few clicks
 i.e.
 The Reference management software (Mendeley)
Reference Management Software
What is that?
Reference management software,
or
citation management software
or
personal bibliographic management software
 A software for scholars and authors to use for
recording and utilizing bibliographic citations
(references). Once a citation has been recorded, it can
be used time and again in generating bibliographies,
such as lists of references in scholarly books, articles
and essays.

What is Mendeley?
Mendeley
 Mendeley is a FREE reference management software
package, used to manage bibliographies and
references when writing essays and articles.
 It’s unique features include its USER FRIENDLY nature
and its role as a SOCIAL NETWORK for collaborating
and sharing documents between groups .
 It allows you to promote yourself and your research
while connecting with over four million other
users from around the world.

How does Mendeley Help?
Mendeley acts as a repository for your
reference information
Materials you add
to your library are
then stored in the
cloud
Applications of Mendeley
 Downloading/Searching references online
 Inserting references into a document (Reference Manager)
 Changing reference styles
 Arranging references in a document (Add and Organize)
 Downloading full text of articles (free articles only)
 Read multiple articles (pdf) easily (Read and Annotate)
 Highlight text, copy text etc.
 Share thoughts on papers with colleagues (Collaborate)
 Automatically back up and sync your files between different computers
(Backup, Sync and Mobile)
 Discover papers, people and public groups. (Network)
In this presentation
1. How to download Mendeley?
2. Installing Mendeley.
3. Creating the library in Mendeley
4. Downloading the references into the library
5. Manually entering the reference (if not available
online)
6. Inserting the references into your document.
7. Selecting journals/changing the style of references.
Download Mendeley
 Mendeley can be downloaded from the following sites
 1. www.mendely.com (Free download)
 Click “create a free account” (simple!)
 Download (starts automatically)
 Install (as any other software)
 Its ready!
 Just click icon on desktop to start using it.

Setting Up A Library
Before you could insert a reference into your documents
(thesis, manuscript etc.,), you need to add that reference
to Mendeley Desktop (i.e., create a library).
Mendeley library creation
 1. Open Mendeley
 2. Click on “Add File” (or any other version)
 3. Select the file/article you wish to add to library
 4. Click “open”
 5. You have added the file. Now you can read it in
Mendeley or insert it as reference in your thesis,
for example.
Adding Reference to the library
Simply drag the files/folder as shown below
Or click on add files, select file, then open
Library created
Mendeley Web (access your library online from everywhere)
Sync: store your Library into cloud storage
It’s a good idea to sync regularly to ensure that your documents and annotations are
saved in the cloud
