Method for finding informations & improve your information literacy Gaëlle Rivérieux – Service IST
Finding information in 3 steps -
1/ Delimit subject, define your research strategy Increasing of information sources is so important that it is necessary to carefully organize yourself Clarify limits of your research topic, Prepare the ground Separate content… What are the borders of your research ? Find Keywords, leading « authors » Define date, location, technology, scientific discipline, interdisciplinarity…  limits … and form Publications type…(article, book, chapter…) Informations repository… Informations sources..(grey literature, peer-reviewed literature…..)   -
2/ Searching information 1st step Classify documentary researchs sorted by « information silos » (look next slide) Be careful not to forget resources potentially significant Use specialized MetaEngine : OIAster, Scirus, Google Scholar… Don’t forget multimedia contents Avoid a random method
EMETTEUR - NOM DE LA PRESENTATION Search stage Information Silos Type of information provided Buidling Skeleton Directories Find definitions, keywords, basics of research Encyclopedia, Table datas Find definitions, news concepts, new words , given by specialists Libraries catalogs (Inria, Insa, Sudoc, UJF…) Books, Manuals, Synthesis ; references ; notes, bibliographies ; index…  Metadatas Bibliographies Identify key resources : leading authors, books, conferences…  Metadatas Building Muscle Editors websites (SpringerLink, ACM Digital Library…) Articles journals, proceedings articles, conferences proceedings…..  Full text available via INRIA subscriptions Databases (Web of Science, Pubmed…) Articles journals, proceedings articles, conferences proceedings…..  Full text available via INRIA subscriptions Open Archives Websites (Hal, ArXiv, OAIster…) Full text, bibliographics references….(papers, phd thesis, courses, and more…)  Full text available Brain Stage Patents, standards (ISO…), Technical reports, European Projects (CORDIS).. Define your technological position ; New opportunities ; Technical State of Art …  Datas, grey literature… Scientific events, Directories of scientifics events, Blogs, forums… « Invisible college », news, scientific « integration », scientific « watch », define leading events to follow….  Meetings, Exchanges, Scientific Social Network…
2/ Search 00 MOIS 2011 - 2 nd step – Apply the same procedure every time as an industrial process  Use the « raking » technical To create a precise and thorough search for information you will need to spend some time gathering together relevant search terms You can practice many of the search techniques to improve your information literacy and search into the DeepWeb … Balance between noise and silence Advanced search How to ? Using the right keyword  controlled vocabulary, using brackets «  » Boolean logic  AND +, OR | , NOT - Nested searches (this type of searching is supported in many resources)  create more complex Boolean logic statements. : {pets NOT (cats OR dogs)} AND behaviour Proximity  SAME, NEAR, W n Truncation (right, left..)  * % ? Wildcard  * ? Inside word Saved searches Save a search to run at a later date  particularly useful if your search statement is complex and lengthy to enter
3/ Exploit While visiting websites and reading papers  collecting references save .pdf recording & using citations : http://referencesbibliographiques.insa-lyon.fr/rediger-des-references U sing a reference management software is very usefull : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_reference_management_software http://iww.inria.fr/fabrica/ >> Gérer une bibliographie http://www.projet-plume.org/ some of them are able to extract metadata directly from the .pdf, automatically generate bibliographies can help to collaborate with other scientists online easily import papers from other research software find relevant papers based on what you’re reading…. and more features to discover…. -
