Micro Features
By Bartek Wielblad
The extreme close up (ECU) is not used much in film openings because it is too
close. This is because it does not show much emotion in the shot/face.
Extreme close up
Close Up
The close up (CU) are used to show detail and can be used as cut-ins. The close up
shot can emphasize their emotion.
Medium Shot (MS)
The medium shot shows how some part of the object is in more detail, whilst still
showing enough for the audience to feel as if they were looking at the whole
subject
Long Shot
This shot usually shows the full entire human body. While the focus is on the
characters there is still plenty of background details which can be recognised
Extreme Long Shot
This can be taken from a quarter of a mile away and is usually as a scene-setting
shot. It normally shows the exterior such as a building or a landscape image.
Track
This is when a camera is set on a track and follows the characters around from their
side.
Pan
The pan shot is a horizontal camera movement which can move left and right on a
central axis.
Tilt
The tilt shot is when the camera is on a vertical movement and points up or down
from a stationary position/location.
Zoom
The zoom shot is not really a camera movement as it does not require the camera
to do any movement. The zooming shot is essentially altering the length of the lens
to give the illusion of moving closer to or further away from the action
Jump Cut
The jump cut (JC) is a transition between two shots which start of for example from
the back and then jumps to being half way.
Pace
Pace is essentially the speed of the clips/plays. It is how fast or slow the clips are
played. It is the rate of movement of the clips/action.
Performance
Performance is acting out the scene. It is also presenting the play, concert or other
form of entertainment.
Diegetic
Diegetic sound is a sound which the character or characters on screen can hear.
Non Diegetic
Non diegetic sound is any sound which the audience can hear and the characters
on screen cant.
Mise-en-scene
Mise en scene is essentially the setting of the play. It is the arrangement of
setting/scenery of the play.
